Doing some family research and have come across the name Tangerine, with the nn of Tangi, for a girl.

What very unusual names have you got in your family tree?

My Nan was called Henrietta, which isn’t as unusual as Tangerine but you never hear of it these days. My grandpa was Percy.

Henrietta is a lovely name, and I have always liked Percy from Percy Thrower gardening fame. Was he Percy or Percival?

Tangi pronounced tan-jee or tangy? Might be worth being aware Tangi means funeral (in Maori) - pronounced most similar to tangy.

Lettice. Waaaaay back, but a variation of Letitia, apparently.

TheyFuckYouUpYourMamAndDad · 01/06/2025 05:58

My grandad (who died before I was born) was called Hagar (pronounced Hay Garr).

LegoAirlines · 01/06/2025 06:29

I know a Satsuma, who carries it off.

Tangi is nicer than Clemmi and the latter is quite popular (Clementine), so I like it

Hagar was a woman in the Bible (Ishmael's mum)

One of Boris Johnson's daughters is called Lara Lettice.

We had an Aunt Tassel in our family, never heard of it since.

Clearinguptheclutter · 01/06/2025 08:58

Oh phew I thought you were going to say you were planning on calling your daughter Tangerine

greenrainandyeetotal · 01/06/2025 09:00

i have a relative from years ago called aubergenie. I’m not surprised it’s not on the top 100 girls names for 2025

Tassel is a great name!

I have a couple of Zilpah or Zilpha in my family tree. I like both, but prefer Zilpah. She'd be shortened to Zilly wouldn't she.

Also a Christian which I really like for a woman.

Vroooooom · 01/06/2025 09:06

@LegoAirlines do they work in care homes by any chance? I can’t imagine too many people with that name.

NorthernDancer · 01/06/2025 09:12

Kerenhappuch, Rechebina, Hephzibah, take your pick. We have an elderly neighbour called Zilpah.

QuinceTamarillo · 01/06/2025 09:21

I love Tangerine! I'd think that the short form would probably be TAN-jee. The most exciting names in my family tree are Elizabelle and Marsaili - both 19th cent Scotland.

BlossomIsSoPretty · 01/06/2025 09:41

I have a man called Fountain and a woman called Wealthyn in my family. My DH has a Philadelphia Star who married Mr Moon! That's back in the early 1800s. Her siblings are William and Matilda!

BlossomIsSoPretty · 01/06/2025 09:42

Oh and a Carys Mynfanwy which is lovely but sounds like "caress my fanny" to my English ears 😄 🤣

BlossomIsSoPretty · 01/06/2025 09:48

Sorry thought of more from my tree, all 1800s.
Noadiah
Meshek
Baden
Doctor
Major Eliot (major his first name, died as a child so definitely his first name and not title)
Esmeralda who's first born daughter was Esma, and Esma first born was Esme. Esme then had 3 boys ij a row and number 3 was Esmund. I guess they thought maybe they wouldn't get a girl but then number 4 was a girl and they called her Jane lol

HeyYouTheRockSteadyCrew · 01/06/2025 09:49

I have a man in my family with the first name Christmas!

Jane Austen’s aunt was called Philadelphia Austen (later Hancock) — her siblings had deeply ordinary names like George and William, but I imagine that Philadelphia was used as a name in the sense of its Greek meaning, rather than being called after the US city.

My poor grandad! 🤣

ToadRage · 01/06/2025 10:55

Tryphena (sister to Aurora and Maud) and Dolphin were a couple found in my family tree. My stepdad has a Jedediah. My Husband's Grandmother was called Queenie, (though she went by Liz for most her life) the legend was they were descended in some way for Queen Catherine Howard though this has never been proven, unlike me which has. We had an Auntie Bubbles, I don't know if that was her real name, I don't remember ever meeting her but apparently did when I was a baby and remember my Mum going to her funeral in the early 00's.
