Tobias Avery - Thoughts and similar feeling boys names for new baby boy!

Hello! I am looking for help for a name for our baby boy who is due in August

It's taken us 7 years to finally get to this point but clearly I had never considered boys names!

Looking for names that are soft and wholesome with a little bit of "difference". No James, Johns, Jacks on this occasion (although all beautiful, my husband and I have very safe names!)

So far our favourite is Tobias Avery...
Thoughts and as many similar name suggestions as possible please :)

Tobias is a great name.

I thought Avery was a girls name, as I know three, all girls.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 31/05/2025 06:26

How about Tobias Henry or Tobias Louis or Toby James

PrincessOfPreschool · 31/05/2025 06:40

Your also have to think a bit practically. Whilst beautiful sounding for wedding vows, Tobias will become Toby, as long as you're OK with that. You can't keep saying, "Tobias, put your shoes on. Tobias, dinner's ready. Tobias, stop it!" etc etc. It's a mouthful and it sounds pretentious

If you don't want the name abbreviated go for one or two syllables.

Lawrence
Rowan
Silas

My advice on middle names is not too worry too much how it sounds because it's really so rarely used. Go for something with meaning or a story, which gives your child some heritage/ identity:
Perhaps a family name (my DS has my grandmother's maiden name which had died out as only girls in her family. She was thrilled). Or a name with an amazing meaning (eg. Long awaited child!). Or, even a beautiful place you have a visited which inspired you in some way. Just something to tell them when they're older rather than 'it sounded nice', which will only really be said when the birth is announced, a christening if you have it, and on their wedding day.

I actually love Lawrence, and even more so the diminutive Lawrie

Moreteaandchocolate · 31/05/2025 06:45

I love Tobias! Avery I’ve only heard as a girls name.

Tobias Everett
Tobias Sullivan
Tobias Finnegan
Tobias Rafferty
Tobias Callahan
Tobias Evander
Tobias Nathaniel
Tobias Gabriel

MyRealUmberBear · 31/05/2025 06:46

Honestly I like Tobias but when I see it written down, Tobias Avery makes my brain jump to Toby Carvery - sorry!

Snakeandladder · 31/05/2025 06:50

Avery = that bloke with the fine eyes from greys anatomy or an enclosure for birds.

Tobias screams social climber or that man in the cut off shorts (never nude) from arrested development.

I think you'll end up sounding like Amanda from motherland in soft play "Tobias darling , please do not play with that boy he looks like a ruffian"

Goingawayistricky · 31/05/2025 06:55

I know a couple Tobais’s and they are both lovely. Great name.
Also not keen on Avery.

Do you need a second name?

Also like Laurence but the “u” spelling.

Lovenpic · 31/05/2025 06:57

Not a fan of Avery at all, it makes me think of grotty little bird cages.

itsgettingweird · 31/05/2025 07:03

Congratulations Flowers

Love Tobias.
Not keen on the Abery bit.

Tobias George
Tobias James
Tobias Matthew
Tobias John

It seems to sound better with a traditional name to me.

Along similar lines have to considered Elliot?

kezzykate · 31/05/2025 07:06

I prefer Toby, but Tobias is also really nice.

together I agree it does look a little like Toby Carvery when written down if that’s an issue.

i feels these names fit the soft and wholesome brief and I think are lovely:

Jonah
Rowan
Eli
Ezra
Hugo
Casper
Felix
Caleb
Sasha
Theodore
Sebastian

Mumofgirls2017 · 31/05/2025 08:00

Agree with this.
Love Tobias

Tobias Sullivan or Evander sound great.

JustShhhhh · 31/05/2025 08:18

I agree with others - I love Tobias (and the nn Toby). Not so keen on Avery, though can't put my finger on why. What about Tobias Anthony? Sounds similar but more traditional name?

ButterButterBattle · 31/05/2025 08:24

Benedict
Titus
Asher
Rollo
Oban

I love Tobias. I wanted to call my boys Barnaby, Tobias and Titus. They have ordinary names along the Jack/Thomas/James lines. They all say they are grateful about this.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 31/05/2025 10:10

Avery makes me think of Aviary. Tobias Avery is too close to Toby Carvery.

Middle names rarely get used, and long first names usually get shortened.
Tobias and Toby are both great, but do both of them sound (and look) OK with the surname?
