Thoughts on Eli/Elijah for newborn DS? Big sisters are Layla and Megan.

I like it!!

Choppedcoriander · 30/05/2025 20:18

They’re completely different names. Eli is not a short form of Elijah. Eli should really be pronounced Elly, technically. I would assume you were Jewish.

pimplebum · 30/05/2025 20:19

Names don’t need to go , great name

SoManyDandelions · 30/05/2025 20:23

It sounds a bit odd to me to have one very biblical name with two non biblical names.

It's a lovely name though!

SlieveMiskish · 30/05/2025 20:23

There’s a priest called Eli in the bible..

SlieveMiskish · 30/05/2025 20:24

What about Malachy?

WoahThreeAces · 30/05/2025 20:24

GREAT name

ABH100 · 30/05/2025 20:24

We very nearly chose Eli, but it just didn’t work with our surname. Heard a little boy called it on holiday yesterday and thought it is a lovely name and his brother had same name as our little boy, so we must have similar taste 😄

No one said they did…

Roselilly36 · 30/05/2025 20:26

Gorgeous name, always liked Elijah, goes nicely with your girls names.

Emanwenym · 30/05/2025 20:27

@Choppedcoriander , why Elly? I think Levi is 'Levvy' in Hebrew, so you could be right.

Elijah doesn't go with the girls' names, and I don't get the 'Eli short for Elijah'.
I don't like Eli and Elijah is a bit too twee-sounding.

The siblings' names don't need to go together.

BoleynMemories13 · 30/05/2025 20:38

I like Eli as a name in it's own right, but really don't like Elijah. It's such a mouthful and any Elijah I've known has spent his days at primary being called Eliza by his peers, as young children really struggle to pronounce this name.

Ferretedaway · 30/05/2025 20:39

I’m not a fan of Eli but like Elijah very much. Also Elias and Ethan.

MysweetAudrina · 30/05/2025 20:53

I have an Elijah. He struggled with it when he was younger and wanted to be called Jason or Mark. He is 16 now and girls like it so he has warmed to it.

Moreteaandchocolate · 31/05/2025 06:58

My teen daughter said the Eli in her class got mispronounced as Ellie by secondary school teachers reading the register, and it’s stuck, that’s put me off the name!

DemonsandMosquitoes · 31/05/2025 06:59

Prefer Elias

That’s the correct pronunciation, though…

Yes, that’s right - Levvy and Elly.

Emanwenym · 31/05/2025 11:09

@Choppedcoriander , do you say Rachel the Hebrew way or as Ray-tchul?

Ethicaldebacle · 31/05/2025 11:14

Jew here... Unless we're actually ready in Hebrew we pronounce names the way you'd expect them in English.

So it's Jacob not Ya'akov and Levi like "Levis" as in the jeans

MilesOfMotivation · 31/05/2025 11:14

I like Eli, but I prefer Elias to Elijah.

Redflamingos · 31/05/2025 16:33

Eli sounds like a girls name. Short for Elinor

Emanwenym · 31/05/2025 18:08

@Redflamingos , in the UK it's Ee-ligh.

Thequeenofwishfulthinking · 31/05/2025 18:45

Love Elijah not keen on Eli.

Silvertulips · 31/05/2025 18:49

Prefer Elias
