Need Inspiration for Short Italian Baby Names

Drummend01 · 29/05/2025 16:10

My partner and I are expecting our first baby, we don't know the gender, his family are Italian, his first daughter has quite an Italian name and our surname is also Italian so we want to stay with that theme as much as possible so it flows.

Our surname is quite long and often mispronounced - 3 syllables and rhymes with ballet. We are in the UK. We prefer shorter names because of the long surname, otherwise it all becomes a bit of a mouthful. Especially because baby will have 2 middle names as per family tradition (poor thing will hate learning to write their name in school 😅)

For boys (I find boys names so hard)
Luca (but so popular it puts us off)
Emilio

For girls
Lucia (Loo-chee-uh rather than Loo-see-uh)
Sofia
Rosa
Kaia (not Italian but love it anyway)
Sienna

Opinion and any other suggestions? TIA x

Mateo

Sofia is nice for a girl

However, did you know that there are certain rules in Italian families
The first born boy should take the Paternal grandfather’s name
The first born girl the Paternal grandmother’s name
Second born boy takes maternal grandfather’s name and second girl maternal grandmother’s name.
I don’t know if that would solve your question of name.
But there are some beautiful Italian names for both males and females.

Thank you for the suggestions, Mateo is already used in the family so unfortunately cannot have that one, as are Arabella and Julietta.

Yes my partners family don't really uphold those rules but there is a male middle name passed to every first born boy which we will continue.

I think lots of Italian boys names that are short are versions of longer names. Eg Vincenzo could be Enzo, Vince, Vin etc.

Rocco was mentioned, that's cool. Mauro, Luca?

I think loads have a shortened version or two.

From an Italian…this is a very old traditional “rule”.
Not followed for generations, at least in the part of Italy I come from?

I love Bruna for a girl

I have an Italian friend with a boy named Elio which I really like! Different enough without being too out there. She was a bit miffed though because Pixar now has a movie coming out soon called Elio - although if the movie fizzles, no big deal, and if it’s a hit, he’ll probably love it! ☺️
