C-section is booked for next week and I’m still really stuck on a name! I like more classic, longer names that can be shortened.

Older brother is called Alexander, so needs to match with that. No H names.

So far we like:
Charlotte (lottie)
Eleanor (Ellie)
Annabel (Annie) is it too weird to have another A name?

All suggestions welcome!

I love Charlotte and it's perfect with Alexander. I like Annabel and I think it's different enough because it's an An name, not another Al name. Eleanor is nice but I only like the full version and I think Ellie/Nell/Elle is pretty inevitable.

Alexanders I know have sisters called:
Sophia
Audrey
Anais
Elizabeth

Other ideas:
Arabella (Bella)
Amelia (Amy)
Bethany (Beth)
Clarissa (Clary)
Cassandra (Cassie)
Caroline (Carrie)

Charlotte (Lottie) is lovely. Classic, pretty and a great literary name. (Charlotte's Web and Charlotte Sometimes two of the best children's books ever written!)

TheFamousMrEd · 28/05/2025 13:57

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Charlotte is my favourite name, but husband has suddenly decided he doesn’t like it 😵‍💫 I’m hoping he changes his mind!

I think Alexander and Eleanor sound the best together, though Ellie is a very popular nickname at the moment. I prefer Nell. Alexander and Charlotte are also quite complimentary. I'm not a fan of sibling names with the same initial so I'd avoid another A.

Other suggestions:

Beatrice
Olive
Elizabeth
Gwendolyn
Eloise

Personally of your choices I’d go for Eleanor - it’s a great match with Alexander as it’s equally classic, yet popular with great historical namesakes (Eleanor of Aquitaine and Alexander the Great) and they both have some of the most nickname choices of the classic names too (Alexander has about a dozen but Eleanor also has nearly the same amount Elle/Ellie/Ella/Nell/Nellie/Leni/Lena/Nora/Nore)

Having said that I always thought if I’d have had a boy and girl I’d have named them Alexander and Antonia - both the same number of syllables and both timeless names from Classical antiquity. I love that Antonia has so many nicknames too (Ann/Annie/Anna/Anya/Toni/Tonya/Nina/Nia). I don’t think same first initials matters for different sex siblings - I share my initials with a brother and it’s never caused any confusion with post as it’s always Mr/Miss then Initials or full name.

Baby girl arrived safely last week, with no c section needed as she flipped around from being breech!

We settled on Eleanor (Ellie) for her name in the end :)

Of no help whatsoever but on our short list of unfortunately 5 girls names we also have
lottie (Charlotte)
and
anna (annalise)
so I think we have similar tastes. It’s so hard to decide isn’t it!
