Which might become popular in future?

I'm out of touch with baby names, plus I don't live in a cool area.

What's a 'cool area'? If you mean what are the latest z list 'celebrities', reality TV 'stars' and YouTube 'influencers' naming their babies, search on Instagram or buy a copy of OK magazine.

If you simply want to know what is popular right now in general, I find the Office for National Statistics is the best place to search as it's the only accurate data (apart from sites like dark greener, who use the ONS data, but they are harder to use for general popularity browsing. They're great if you have a certain name in mind which you wish to research to though). The ONS produce a spreadsheet every year, showing the names in order of popularity (based on actual registrations). They also have other interesting breakdown charts, such as most popular names based on mum's age, birth month or area etc. Maybe you can find what you're looking for there if you have a certain 'cool' area in mind. I'm still baffled by that term though. Chelsea and Westminster? Cheshire? Define 'cool area'.

Be warned. The general ONS list will give you data from England and Wales as a whole, so uncool people in uncool areas will also be included 😉

If you want trendy names, probably somewhere like NameBerry is your best bet, as they list their most 'popular' names based on hits, so they'll be the names most searched for as opposed to names people have actually used.

ONS also do the top names by age, and I guess the under 25s list might be cool because they're the newest naming generation? It's not that different to the top names generally but an interestingly a different number 1 for girls.

I think we're about to have a resurgence in granny names that have moved forward a generation, so instead of Grace, Sylvia, Pearl etc the names of women who are 70ish now. Barbara, Jeannie, Alison, Linda etc.

Hooooplah · 26/05/2025 10:54

I live in a cool area! (East London). And I work with kids in the same area.

The names I’m seeing are things like:
Lula
Mae / May (as a first name not a middle. Really like this one actually)
Fox / Wolfe
Bowie (I know THREE! All girls.)
Lots of Juniper / Juno

The thing is about kids names in these areas, they try and find names out of the top national 100 names list. So there isn’t much crossover.

I like Delilah. I didn't know that was being used. Dd has a friend in sixth form called Elijah which is lovely.

This is the Shetland latest. https://www.shetnews.co.uk/2025/03/24/james-theo-popular-baby-names/

I’ve always found Lerwick to be cooler than much of the UK.

Nice names.

Wow. I'm an early 70s baby and had Alisons in my year.
