Kit and Emmett stand out to me

Jude is the German word for Jew. It reminds me of the Jewish Star of David. As a name it doesn’t travel well outside of English speaking countries.

I see this type of comment sometimes but want to say to OP that it’s pronounced yoodeh in German, Jude Bellingham played for Dortmund (German team) and travelled with the name to the country where it’s written as the same word, and a close friend who is Jewish just had a baby Jude (it is a popular name at the moment!). I personally love it as a name and to be honest disagree about the travel comment. It’s so popular and there are peoppe like Jude Bellingham and Jude Law travelling all over the world! It’s also a biblical name and has huge significance for Catholics - there’s a Saint Jude

That is your opinion @NearlyThere91 . Some names do not travel well.

Yes, definitely my opinion - but also shared two very famous proof points who are constantly travelling if OP was worried. Just think it’s a lovely name (wish I had a boy!) but every opinion is valid. If we all had same thoughts on names we’d live in a very dull world!

DuchessOfNarcissex · 28/05/2025 23:43

It's very popular @NearlyThere91 .
The two names I can think of that don't work internationally are Peter and Violet. Both nice in the UK but not in France.
Jude to me is the Star of David with the word Jude in it. I like Yehuda, which is the Hebrew version.
I know a few Judes who are women, so that puts me off.
That's my opinion though.
na na na na-na-na hey...

Jacob

or what about Jonah?

Edited

Just because a couple of English speaking Judes are able to travel and live abroad does not prove that the name Jude travels well.

In fact, if you are able to read German, you will see the comments made about the connotations of the word Jude being used as a name.

this is making me feel a bit uncomfortable to be honest so I’ll stop responding. I don’t think it’s a bad word. It’s a terrible historical association that’s only when seeing the name written vs spoken- and as I said, my Jewish friend has a Jude. It’s a catholic/ saint’s name also. This is all a little unsettling for me

clarrylove · 29/05/2025 11:13

You can't call him Emmett! It's what people in the South West use as a derogatory term for the influx of summer tourists.

Redflamingos · 29/05/2025 14:32

@NearlyThere91Some of us were simply responding to your denial that some names, including Jude, don’t travel well.

These posts are meant to help the op in their decision to choose a name for their newborn and I feel it’s important that they are aware of all aspects and associations of a name.

TidyAmberPoster · 29/05/2025 16:47

Love Jude (for what it is worth op I am Jewish, know lots of Judes - adults mostly women but quite a lot of baby boys too). Also Kit and Spencer I really like.
