Is Fiona classic or outdated?

Hi everyone!
I’m expecting my first daughter next month, and my husband and I have decided to name her Fiona.
I know it’s not a super trendy or common name these days, so I’d love to hear your thoughts.
Does Fiona come across to you as a classic and elegant name, or does it feel more outdated or “granny-ish”?

As expected, some of you brought up Shrek 😂
I don’t really mind the association but I’ve actually never really watched the movie…
Fiona’s supposed to be a good character though, right?

Yeah exactly - I don't think Princess Fiona = bullying, more like a fun reference.

Peridot1 · 24/05/2025 23:16

Well I like to think I’m a classic. Probably a bit outdated to be fair! But that’s an age thing.

I like it but am biased!

Wynter25 · 24/05/2025 23:17

All I think of is shrek 🙈

GotToWearShades · 24/05/2025 23:18

Classic Scottish and/or posh. I like it, due for a revival. Good friend in 6th Form in the early 80s was a Scottish Fiona. She and I bonded over our never fashionable but - we thought - cool enough names

She’s nice but she’s a ogre.

i know a child called Gloria who is constantly compared to the hippo in Madagascar. She’s a nice hippo, but still a hippo and most young girls don’t want to be referred to as an ogre or a hippo.

NameChangeNow3000 · 24/05/2025 23:24

Very outdated

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 24/05/2025 23:26

Don't like it

I do like Ffion (pronounced Fee - on/awn)

Judiezones · 24/05/2025 23:27

Classic and a lovely name

It's middle-aged rather than grannyish - Fionas seem to be in their 50s! But if you love it that's the main thing.

I’d have to agree with this. Not due a revival yet imo but not a bad name by any means.

SuffolkBargeWoman · 24/05/2025 23:33

Classic
Quite upmarket
I wonder if the people who don't like it are in the Nevaeh, younique, balonz (anyone remember him?🤣) camp?

AdaColeman · 24/05/2025 23:33

Fiona is a classic name, not outdated at all. I really like it, it's pretty when they are little, and classy and elegant when they are grown up.
I've known a few Fionas over the years, and they've all been lovely.

Well I don’t like it but I also have no idea what you are on about, so il say no is the answer to your question

cornflourblue · 24/05/2025 23:36

Classic Scottish name. I know many, many Fionas but come to think of it, none are under 30.

Go with it if you love it.

TeachesOfPeaches · 24/05/2025 23:39

Makes me think of Shrek and the eldest daughter in Shameless

I’m definitely in the classic/ boring camp when it comes to names, but I’ve never liked Fiona.

I hear a really whiny, whingy sound in it like a Parisian fire engine: Feeeee- OOooooow-naaaah.

It’s also not helped by the fact a Fiona I went to school with had to give a speech in front of the class and only managed to stand up front and emit a series of perfectly audible nervous farts and not much else.

But that’s a very personal and idiosyncratic association I admit.

Doitrightnow · 24/05/2025 23:42

I love it, it was high on our list.

PrincessOfPreschool · 24/05/2025 23:50

Dated unless you're Scottish!

This. I am Scottish!

Birdsongsinging · 24/05/2025 23:53

It’s interesting because if I hear it with a Scottish accent I don’t mind it.

In RP it gets a very drawn out vowel sound, hence the siren simile.

Thank goodness I’ve never heard it in a very drawled American accent: I bet that would be even more accentuated.

But if you are Scottish op it will probably be fine.

WhatANightForADance · 25/05/2025 00:07

I think it’s really outdated. The youngest one I know is about 30 and she thinks it’s outdated for her age.

MumChp · 25/05/2025 00:08

Fiona is wonderful.

AnneMarieW · 25/05/2025 00:11

A bit dated, but I don’t dislike it. I know ones ranging from their 20’s to 50’s and it’s not at all a bad name, just not one I think of as a classic.

Classic names to me are ones that either have classical origins (hence the name) or lots of prominent historical figures with the name - and I can’t really say many spring to mind for Fiona the way they do Elizabeth, Mary, Catherine etc. Doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with it, it’s just not exactly my taste.

DramaAlpaca · 25/05/2025 00:20

It's not a classic name as in it doesn't fit the specific definition of classic (biblical/royal/Shakespearean/classical/used regularly for centuries etc) but it's certainly a traditional name

For what it's worth, I think it's beautiful.

Well yes, but you know how cruel kids can be! She was an ogre after all! It’s really only older teenagers and adults that are more likely to mak a positive association as they ‘get’ that she is a sassy empowered character imo.

Just my opinion since you asked and also added to that the only Fiona I’ve ever known was in her 60s and not a nice person so I’m definitely not voting it up! 😅
