Whicu do you prefer?

  1. Sofia & Marina
  2. Mahina & Ayana

Thanks! :)

Most people wouldn't know what to do with ‘Mahina’ - it doesn’t sound like a name - and looks/sounds like ‘machina’
Ayana is easier, as is sort of phonetic. But also sounds like a resort name on a tropical island.
Unless you have a unique heritage where those names make sense - and hence carry on your daughters heritage, I’d not use names like that.

The first set. Sofia and Marin are nice enough and recognisable.

Mahina will get mixed up with Marina, Machina, and other words.
Ayana will get the letters transposed to Anaya and other names.
Both look a bit like random words from different islands or something.

Marina not Marin. Sloppy typing on my part.

GoldenRosebee · 17/05/2025 11:41

Sofia and Marina - how do you pronounce Marina tho? Ma-ree-na or Ma-rye-na?

Mumofgirls2017 · 17/05/2025 11:45

Sofia and Marina

It's usually Ma-ree-na

CreativeKeny · 17/05/2025 13:25

What does machina mean? :D

As Ma-ree-na :) you roll the r, so it's not pronounced like the Marina harbour in English

What does machina mean? Both you and another user mentioned that 😅

@CreativeKeny , it's part of a saying, Deus ex machina (literally, 'God from the machine'). It means an unexpected power or event saving a seemingly hopeless situation, especially as a contrived plot device in a play or novel.

Oh alright, thanks for clarifying :)

Sofia and Marina.

jsku · 17/05/2025 17:45

Machina is a latin word - it’s where ‘machine’ comes from, meaning an artificial device, like an engine.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 17/05/2025 17:47

Strictly speaking, it's from Greek.

MirandaBlu · 17/05/2025 20:50

Love Marina! I'd definitely choose Sofia for the other name, as it avoids duplicating the -na sound at the end and so makes the names a little more distinct from each other.

lurkerchan · 17/05/2025 20:55

Marina and Ayana is lovely.

No. 1.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 18/05/2025 19:25

Sofia and Marina

Although Sophia will be easier on her and is nicer (IMO)

user1492757084 · 20/05/2025 07:24

Sophie and Marina would be my ultimate fave.
