Baby arriving end of this month, not sure of gender yet. Currently planning on Orla for a girl and Nicholas for a boy. Thoughts??

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I love both but I don’t like the way Orla is pronounced unless it’s pronounced Or-la as opposed to Aw-la. Hurts my ears.

Waitingforspring77 · 14/05/2025 16:45

Orla , not keen sorry.
Nicholas is a classic and a lovely name!!

Mumof1andacat · 14/05/2025 16:58

Not orla. I like names like Nicholas. I also like james, oliver, andrew, matthew and toby.

Moreteaandchocolate · 14/05/2025 18:39

Both are nice and hit that sweet spot of familiar but not overused. Easy to spell and pronounce. Not overly dated.

BebbanburgIsMine · 14/05/2025 18:55

Orla is lovely

There aren’t really any boys names that I like

HugoYorway · 14/05/2025 19:01

Not keen on Orla (Oral/'Awla').

sickandsleepy · 14/05/2025 19:26

I loved Orla and had it lined up until my Jewish MIL informed me it literally means foreskin in Hebrew… I was so disappointed!

MissDorothyParker · 14/05/2025 19:37

It also means vomit in Irish, 😕
Unless you make it Órla

SchnizelVonKrumm · 14/05/2025 19:43

Nicholas - lovely and underused.

Orla - depends on your accent. I'm sure it sounds lovely when pronounced correctly but if you live somewhere where it would be "awla" then it's awful, sorry.

Agree

WhoStoleYourHighHorse · 14/05/2025 19:49

Both lovely. Nicholas is most definitely due a return. Love Orla - also Oonagh and Aoife.

Bunnyisputbackinthebox · 14/05/2025 20:58

Can't get past Orla being an anagram or Oral tbh...
And actually made me think of Knicker - less not Nicolas!!
Sorry op.

BootballJoy · 14/05/2025 22:35

Not a fan of Nick as a shortening so wouldn't use Nicholas myself (but like Nico).

Orla is very popular, and we also know little ones called Isla, Ayla, Arla, Ella... Not a fan of the 'or' bit.

Gowlett · 14/05/2025 22:41

Orla needs a strong R, or it doesn’t work.

I like Nicholas. Nicky is also a favourite.

Adelesky · 14/05/2025 22:42

Love both those names. Orla would be pronounced Ór rather than Aw as it means gold in Irish so the full translation is golden lady/ princess

ninjahamster · 14/05/2025 22:43

Love Orla.

Nicholas makes me think knicker-less.

Unfortunately, that's not the pronunciation you'll hear around here, and the name is popular, probably because of 'Awla Keely' (Orla Kiely)

Adelesky · 14/05/2025 22:50

I agree it’s probably best left for Irish accents then!

Readytohealnow · 15/05/2025 00:54

Don’t like Orla

Love Nicholas. I usually hate nicknames but if a Nicholas becomes a Nick that wouldn’t bother me. Nicky would.

Oystersandchampagne · 15/05/2025 00:57

Both names are lovely. X

4kids3pets · 15/05/2025 01:30

Can't stand Nicholas but then again the one I knew wasn't nice lol

caringcarer · 15/05/2025 01:42

I don't like Orla.

YourNumber · 15/05/2025 01:46

I think Orla is a lovely name, but I don’t like Nicholas.

It’s a classic Irish name and luckily in Irish it means Golden Princess 🥳
Its beautiful

Nicholas is gorgeous and in Irish means to conquer

They are both beautiful classic names !
