Liking a name but only when spelled a certain way

A bit like Anne from green gables. The boys name Lee is horrible (imo.) Makes me think of 80s comprehensive schools maths sink set. But I met a little boy called Li (I think Chinese heritage) and thought it was lovely.

I also like Ceri but not Kerry.

Wondering if it is just me.

Absolutely I think Lee is horrid but Li is lovely, probably because the Lees i've met have been bald men with england tattoos in their 50’s and the ones spelled Li have been lovely young students.

And the spelling but mainly the connections I make to people with the names.

I have a Sofia but wouldn’t call her Sophia. Perfectly nice name but I just don’t like it the same.

Spanglemum02 · 10/05/2025 21:21

I like Jemma but not Gemma. I know some nice guys called Lee.

I like Jemma but not Gemma. I know some nice guys called Lee.

It’s the name I don’t like, not the individuals christened it!

I like Jemma but not Gemma too. Also Kirsty (only spelled that way). Carol without an e.

Whatisityoucantface · 10/05/2025 21:48

Li is cute. I know Welsh males and a female spelt Leigh, but I still think it’s a bit of a crap name

Whatisityoucantface · 10/05/2025 21:49

I prefer Clare to Claire

RosesAndHellebores · 10/05/2025 21:52

How else would Kirsty be spelled?

clocktick · 10/05/2025 21:52

Kirstie?

I prefer Jodie to Jody. But Mandy over Mandie? I'm very fussy with my y's and ie's 😅

LaserCatToyLunacy · 10/05/2025 21:59

Katy is just wrong. Katie.

However, Poppie and Hollie also wrong.

That’s so funny because I came on to say Katy is lovely but not Katie! I think Katie would be assumed to be short for Katherine/Catherine/Kathryn whereas Katy is a full name in its own right.

DorothyStorm · 10/05/2025 22:04

I like Rebekah, bit Rebecca.

I love Rebecca, hate Rebekah!

PlanetOtter · 10/05/2025 22:06

DC2 might have been Casper… but I only wanted Casper and DH only wanted Caspar.

Thankfully she was a girl.

LilyJosephine · 10/05/2025 23:09

Yep, I feel this way too - Juliet lovely and elegant, Juliette is fussy. Isabel is a classic but Isabelle too frilly. I like Susanna, not sure about Susannah (why does it need the extra H?). I guess I don’t like names that look over elaborate when there’s a simpler spelling available!

Heidi2018 · 10/05/2025 23:22

Love Mollie over Molly, way prefer Eoghan to Eoin or Owen, and prefer Cathy to Kathy!
(I'm in Ireland before people come at me saying some of these names aren't pronounced the same 😅)

Iamanunsafebuilding · 11/05/2025 00:04

I prefer Cara to Kara but DH felt more strongly the other way to me and DD is Kara!

aredcar · 11/05/2025 00:22

I much prefer Anne to Ann. I totally get where Anne Shirley was coming from.

I prefer Amy to Aimee. Caitlin to Katelyn. Annabel to Annabelle.

Stichintime · 11/05/2025 00:25

I thought the Aimee spelling was used if it was short for Amelia. That's what my friend did for her daughter anyway.

Gowlett · 11/05/2025 00:30

I like Leigh. Agree about Hollie, Kerrie, Poppie…

I thought it was French. I do know quite a few Aimee’s as a standalone name (who aren’t French)

Snoodley · 11/05/2025 00:35

I like Huw but not Hugh

Kirstie?

Kirstie is pretty frequently used in the UK and other English-speaking countries. Kirsti, Kersti, and Kjersti (this last one was originally pronounced completely differently - more like SHESH-te or even ZHEZH-te) are also trad variants or diminutives of Kirsten/Christina in various Scandi or Baltic languages.

There's also the (Scottish) Gaelic spelling Ciorstaidh (and occasionally Curstaidh, Curstag, Ciorstag), which sounds very much like a "typical" Scottish pronunciation of Kirsty, but is probably a reconstituted name rather than one with a lot of historical use in Gaelic-speaking Scotland, where Cairistìona or the Irish variant Crístíona were more likely used - later giving way to Christina, Christian (unisex for a long time in Scotland), and Kirsty, Kirstie, Kirsten, Kirsteen, etc.

Readytohealnow · 11/05/2025 00:51

There are about a million versions of my friend’s name..
ey
ay
with a y
with an i
with a d, without a d
even heard it spelled with a z

She just says she hates her name. I love it for her, it suits her and like her spelling the most. But the spelling issue must be a nightmare people always get it wrong.
