Hi, posted a name thread yesterday with a list of Turkish names on my list but forgot to include the name Ilayda.

Would be grateful for any opinions on how this name reads to a non-turkish ear and how you assume it is pronounced upon reading it? Also, general thoughts on the name?

Thank you :-)

When typed the capital i and a small L look the same which doesn't help.

I think there are some parents who don't care that their child will spend a lifetime explaining how to pronounce and spell their name and some parents who just never inflict that on them.

That's my opinion anyway 😀

Yes this does concern me a little….

What do you think of the name Selin?

Both horrible imo

BabyOrca · 08/05/2025 09:26

I don't like how similar the I and L look so close together.

Don't like Selin as lots of pun potential and looks like a boys name from a non Turkish perspective

Judgejudysno1fan · 08/05/2025 09:27

What about with an E, is Turkish names Muslim too? Thought Turkish would use Arabic names also.

BabyOrca · 08/05/2025 09:27

I had a Turkish friend as a kid, can't remember how her name was spellt but it was pronounced Chay-lin which is cute IMO

Judgejudysno1fan · 08/05/2025 09:28

Elayda. E lay da.
I like it. Reminds me of Elaine or Elaina

FortyElephants · 08/05/2025 09:29

Are spellings flexible? Elaida/Elayda and Seline would be more easily pronounced and spelt to English eyes and ears

There is a Turkish girl at my sons school called Selini. And you can also use Selina which is Arabic as well. I love Arabic names.

Yes the seline is nice and sounds French and pretty

Emanwenym · 08/05/2025 11:33

Selina which is Arabic as well., I think it's of Greek origin (Selene - godess of the moon)

BootballJoy · 08/05/2025 12:37

I used to work with some Turkish people and Selin, Pelin and Elif were my favourite names.

lurkerchan · 08/05/2025 14:33

i-LAY-da. rhymes with darth vader. it's nice, unique and pronounced just as it's spelt.

user1492757084 · 08/05/2025 15:43

No.No.
Yes to Serena.

Moreteaandchocolate · 08/05/2025 17:02

Id be concerned that it would be shortened to ill (at secondary school kids seem to called each other by the first syllable of their names!)

Sodabubbles · 08/05/2025 17:09

I love ilayda! (Guessing it is ill-lay-dah)
