I've loved this name since I was a kid and told myself if I ever had a daughter I'd name her Amelie.

What are your thoughts?

Very pretty. It must have been popular 17 years ago as there are three Amelies in DS1s year, perhaps because of the film.

MrsSkylerWhite · 05/05/2025 14:04

One of our daughter’s friends was an Amelie. Feisty little character. I really liked her so like the name.

WtafIsThat · 05/05/2025 14:05

I like it but it’s hugely popular as is Amelia. There are endless Amelies, Amelias and Millies around.

HiddenInCubeOfCheese · 05/05/2025 14:07

Would you spell it with the accent over the first e?

Would you spell it with the accent over the first e?

Wouldn't it be pronounced differently?

A marginal inflection. I only asked as, to me, it’s a French name so I’d spell it the French way, so then wondered if you were French and if people would get all “oh it’s appropriation!” about it or something…then realised I’d probably thought about it far too much!

Moreteaandchocolate · 05/05/2025 14:34

I love it - the only thing that puts me off is the one I know gets misheard as Emily.

loropianalover · 05/05/2025 14:36

It’s a beautiful name but I wouldn’t use it due to how popular it is. But if it’s your favourite name that you’ve always wanted, I wouldn’t let popularity put you off.

I don’t think you’re overthinking it. You’re 100% correct. I have a French name with an accent. I always put it but I don’t care if others don’t. What bothers me is people with the same name (rarer than hens teeth, it’s usually an English bastardisation) and they say “oh, mine doesn’t have the accent”. Yes it does! Learn about your name.

Blueplu · 05/05/2025 17:01

I like it a lot but my husband vetoed it 😩

DuchessOfNarcissex · 05/05/2025 17:51

Not keen. It's nicer than Amelia but not as nice as Emily. Seems a name from the 00s.

ohmondew · 05/05/2025 17:55

Very try hard, unless you're French.

purpleme12 · 05/05/2025 17:56

It's lovely

It's my child's middle name

3peassuit · 05/05/2025 17:57

Lovely name.

DramaAlpaca · 05/05/2025 17:57

Lovely - if you happen to have a French accent.

LeedsZebra90 · 05/05/2025 17:58

My sister is an Amelie, she's late 30s and it was pretty rare in the UK when we were kids and she always used Amy as a nickname as everyone misheard Amelie as Emily. I know a lot of primary school Amelies now and whilst I do like it I feel they just get lumped in with the Amelia/Emilia/Emilys.

purpleme12 · 05/05/2025 18:00

It's SO much prettier than Amelia/Emily

Neurotoxic · 05/05/2025 20:59

It's not a bad name itself but I think it's overrated. Just reminds me of the oh-so-quirky film.

Wafflesforbreakfast · 05/05/2025 23:20

It's a beautiful name. Ami is a sweet nickname.

PurpleChrayn · 05/05/2025 23:55

The French pronunciation is gorgeous.

it doesn’t quite have the same ring when a British person says it. “Ammerleh.”

I wouldn't say it was gorgeous, but it's pretty. 'Ammerley' isn't, and that's what it sounds like here.
Elodie is similar - looks pretty but sounds meh in UK accents.

PlanetOtter · 06/05/2025 09:52

It’s fine. Nice enough, but blends in with all the other vowel-heavy names.

BreathingDeep · 06/05/2025 09:57

I have an Amelie and I still absolutely adore the name. She has always been the only one in her class, and actually, both her schools. It’s never been an issue around shortened versions either - everyone just calls her by her name.
