Heath Grant or Edison Grant?

Elanne · 04/05/2025 15:56

I have written a post here before, as we love the names Heath & Edison for a baby boy due at the end of May. We both like Heath better, but unsure if it sounds good with the middle name Grant. We would like to take the father's middle name, the surname is 2 syllables. The fact Heath & Grant both just have one syllable, it making me want to go for Edison. What do you all think?

We have an Edison, never hear it anywhere else and he’s never called ed or eddy, always Edison and none has a problem with that, he’s 5. Also don’t get lightbulb comments like above posters are saying 🤣

AM1994 · 04/05/2025 19:12

And of course we love it

Ah but the posters here have been reading about a fellow named Tom Edison who’s working on an idea for snap-on electric lights.

Heath Grant is a great name - sounds very handsome! I met a toddler called Heath & thought what a cool, strong sounding name, good for kids and grown ups. I like Edison too & have never met one - good luck with your choice!

No one has mentioned Chitty Chitty Bang Bang yet?

Zeitumschaltung · 04/05/2025 20:14

Heathcliff perhaps if you are worried about a string of single syllables in the full name?

TheeNotoriousPIG · 04/05/2025 20:23

I know a little Heath and he is excellent! Thus, I vote for Heath.

His middle name probably won't be used very often, so I wouldn't worry too much about the syllables, especially if your surname has two.

Firsttimebabymummy · 04/05/2025 20:23

I vote Heath Grant!

Edison is much nicer but Eddie Grant isn’t good (I don’t wanna dance!)

Edison invented the électric light bulb. Astonished no one seems aware of that.

Eddison

HugoYorway · 04/05/2025 20:39

@Words , 2nd reply mentioned it, as have others I expect.

Cedrabbage · 04/05/2025 20:39

At first I read 'health grant' as if it were a thing. That one's a pass from me.

OccasionalHope · 04/05/2025 20:47

TBH I would avoid any surname as a Christian name when the surname is Grant, as otherwise it’s going to sound like a charity not a child.

OccasionalHope · 04/05/2025 20:48

Could Edwin work for you?

Words · 04/05/2025 20:59

@HugoYorway I dont think people got the joke though

Is Grant a family name? It is an unusual choice and quite different from either Heath or Edison.
The only Heath I’ve heard of is Heath Ledger, an Australian actor who was famius in the 90s/ 2000s. He was very cool. I have heard it as a diminutive of Heathcliffe, but they were a family with all literary names.
As far as I’m aware Edison is a surname: my female History mistress back in the 70s or the American inventor.
To my old British ear neither are a great fit with Grant tbh, but as we hardly use middle names it really doesn’t matter.
Heath
Dale
Lee
Forest
Edison
Atticus
Edward
Mitchell
Austin

Of course they are…where are you getting that idea from?

Not worrying too much, but I’d like to names to flow.

In my experience, names matter far more to the parents than the child. Most children just accept that their name is their name. I grew up with some friends with truly amazing names, but we all just accepted that it was their name. Shortening / nick names / piss taking etc happened to all regardless, about their name, or something else. I appreciate that I am older, so times may have changed, but just pick the name you like irrespective of what anyone else thinks. This thread proves that we all have our own taste.

I am struggling to not mention that Viz had a character called Student Grant though.
