For example:
Gia Grace
Ayla Amira
Joshua James

And using it as a nickname, I.e. GG, JJ ext

It can work really well, but using the initials as a nickname I'm not so keen on.

Edit. And Alya Amira, repeating As at beginning AND end is too much.

I don’t mind the double initial, and the nn is nice to have for close friends and family but I wouldn’t personally use it day to day as the way they are known to most people.

Please don’t do the using initials as a nickname thing. I have three in my class…Two with the same initials (think CC) and one with two different, yet similar initials (eg KC).

They all do have real names but parents insist on the initials. It’s just not nice (and feels very weird calling out initials).

It's fine. No one ever uses the middle name anyway. You'll announce it at the birth then that's it.

MirandaBlu · 28/04/2025 22:47

Same initial, no problem. Initials as everyday name can work well if the initials form a familiar name/diminutive (Cece, Gigi, Vijay) but a bit wanky for a child if they're clearly two initials (AA, HH).

BrianWankum · 28/04/2025 22:50

I know a family that did this, but didn't use the initials as a nickname, and I thought then that it was very cute and was a bit annoyed I hadn't thought of it 😁 I've got over the annoyance, but I do still like it. I'd let any nickname happen organically though.

AliceMcK · 28/04/2025 22:53

Agree nicknames should happen organically.

Have same initial for first and middle name fine but again cringe on doing it on purpose to use as a nickname.

SkaneTos · 28/04/2025 23:34

I think it's fine. I know a girl named Lena, middle name Louise.

About the nickname, I'm not sure. Some letters would work better than others. "EE" and "NN" does not work so well, I think.

caringcarer · 28/04/2025 23:44

Whatever you do give DC different first initials. My DH used to get mad because his initials AC were the same as his Dad's and his Mum's. He used to hate it and his Dad often opened his mail. Mr AC.

EcruCardigan · 29/04/2025 08:45

Grace and James are filler middle names. Nothing wrong with them but they're overused. JJ sounds a bit babyish, and GG is a horse. AA sounds like someone can't hear (Eh. Eh?)
I know a few JJs, TJs, KCs etc, and a Jayjay, Tjay and Kaceys (various spellings) , so it's not new. I think it's a bit 1980s and naff.

Strawberrycheesecake7 · 29/04/2025 12:29

It’s not something I would do but I think it’s fine. My first and middle names begin with the same letter and it’s never bothered me. I don’t use it as a nickname though, SS would be a weird nickname.

FoFanta · 29/04/2025 12:35

We did it with both ours, but it just sort of happened without much thought (loved a first name for both and then used a family name for the middle name that had the same initial). Both would work as nicknames Bibi and JJ but we don't use them like that. Both of them have first names that are nice to say anyway.
