Baby girl name

We're an English/french family, living in the UK. Please help me think about the pros and cons of these names for baby girl. Fyi I'm not worried about the accents.

Shortenings would probably be
Céleste -- Tess
Azélie -- Zélie
Delphine -- Delphi
Though we would see what emerges...

Thanks!

Ooh I love all 3, but I like French/french sounding names.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 27/04/2025 00:13

Azelie, although I haven’t heard it till now and it may be a PITA here.

Celeste always makes me think of the pill. Maybe Cecile instead?

Delphine sounds cheesy 1950s to me, like Jeanette or Giselle, I appreciate it might have quite a different vibe in France.

Pemba · 27/04/2025 00:19

Celeste and Tess are both gorgeous, but how do you get Tess from Celeste?

That's why I voted Azelie, the shortening to Zelie seems more natural, and obvious. Not heard of the name before but it's pretty!

Delphine is fine though, but it's my least favourite of the three.

(Really sorry, I can't type accents).

Celeste (Tess) - I chose this as it’s pretty, easy to spell and pronounce, and I love love the nn Tess. This is the one I’d like to be called myself.

Azelie (Zelie) gorgeous, the only reason it’s second place is that it’s less well-known in the UK so would need spelling / possible pronunciation explanations (and I’m all for an easy life!)

Delphine - although I like this and it is well known, I just can’t help hearing “Delphine Donkey” from Peppa Pig! I think that show is so widely watched by young children (& their parents!) that I won’t be the only one who can’t shake that association!

BunnyRuddington · 27/04/2025 08:34

I wouldn’t worry about your DD having to spell Azelie in England. I have the most boring, over popular name of my generation and I still have to spell it almost every time.

Go with the names you love, all of the ones in your list are absolutely lovely Smile

I would most like to be called Delphine out of those names so my vote is Delphine.

SkaneTos · 27/04/2025 14:59

Those are all beautiful names!
I voted for Delphine.

I have never heard of Tess being a nickname for Céleste, but it's very cute!

I chose Azélie as it sounds the nicest to me, and I love Zélie too, just nice sounds and a quirky but not bonkers (to me) name.

I do really like Delphine but as others said I can unfortunately only hear 'Delphine Donkey' from Peppa Pig too, which is a shame as it is a lovely sound.

I really dislike Celeste - it sounds like a really nasty adult bully to me, although I've no idea why! I love Tess though.

Also in the UK - possible con - the accents on the 'e's will probably get dropped. I can find them on my mobile keyboard, which was a fairly recent discovery, but no idea where they are on my desktop! (I copied and pasted for Azélie).

That might be me being stupid but I'm sure I'm not the only one!

People might not bother to handwrite them too in the UK.
