Tree names - what do you think?

So my eldest is Rowan (boy), and bump is a few months away from arrival.

If bump is female, we’re fairly set on Elowen (pronounced Eh-LOW-en), maybe Holly as a back up. Could be swayed to other ideas.

If bump is male, we’re undecided. Maybe Lennox (and Lex for short). Although I do like Lachlan (not tree themed but still nice). Some version of Ash is another option, although I think Ashley is a girls name usually these days?

Any other ideas? We’ve looked at many tree name lists, but I want to hear opinions/preferences.

Songlines · 25/04/2025 16:51

Willow
Oakleigh/Oakley
Olive

RedHelenB · 25/04/2025 16:52

My imaginary children's names were always Rowan and Sorrel.

GroupDiscountOnTheBusToHell · 25/04/2025 16:53

Rowan (as in Atkinson) and the Eh-LOW-en pronunciation sound very similar to me.

Ashleigh is more common for girls these days I think, Ashley for boys.
Willow is nice.

Those 2 names together sound naff (sorry @Procrastinatrixx !) 😬

Has to be Willow. Very popular these days, but a lovely name. Smile

Cassie, for Cassiopeia, an aromatic small tree

(Rowan and Willow are far too popular)

Procrastinatrixx · 25/04/2025 17:02

Yes, fair comment about the two names together sounding too similar, I hadn’t realised til I wrote it out how similar they are phonetically. Not that it’s it’s a bar to me though, feels lyrical! Hollis is also promising! I’m Australian so Bruce is not an option, I would never live it down 😆

Elowen will have a nightmare trying to explain pronunciation

Moreteaandchocolate · 25/04/2025 17:03

Elowen is lovely (although maybe a little rhymey with Rowan, if that bothers you?) Holly is one of my favourite ever names.

Boys - I love the nn Ash - maybe Asher / Ashton? Or do you like Nash?
Lachlan is nice and I quite like Lennox.
Ideas (nature themed - not all trees) Ivo, Leo, Callum, Jasper, Beckett, Dylan, Orson, Finn.

😆 G'day mate. 😆

😍

BatchCookBabe · 25/04/2025 17:05

Have to admit @Procrastinatrixx Bruce is a bloody awful name for a newborn. Especially for a girl! 😂

I also like Asher with ash for short. I don’t like the rhyming of rowan and Elowen.

I like Hazel, Olive or ivy for a girl. I also know a magnolia.

It’s the Cornish pronunciation, which is our heritage. I’ve spent my life correctly misspellings of my name, so I’m not too bothered by that kind of thing :) and let’s be honest, if we go with it she’ll probably become an Ellie anyway 😝

Juniper
Bay
Cassia
Cherry
Willow
Holly
Myrtle
Laurel
Olive
Rosella
Daphne

Mulledjuice · 25/04/2025 17:41

I actually like Myrtle! But I wonder if most people would think of the HP character

mathanxiety · 25/04/2025 17:42

Rowan and...

Asher
Hollis
Darragh (Irish name meaning oak tree)

Hazel
Willow
Keziah (related to the acacia tree)
Ivy

I prefer Holly as a sister for Rowan. Elowen and Rowan sound too alike imo.

MrsSunshine2b · 25/04/2025 19:05

If you like Elowen, I don't think it matters that it doesn't "go" with Rowan. Kids are not sets and they don't have to match.

Pigeon123456 · 25/04/2025 19:07

How about Bryony?

JDM625 · 25/04/2025 19:08

I agree that Rowan and Elowen are very similar, and more akin to twin names.

Do you live in Aus or UK?
Jarrah/Jarra
Acacia
Banksia
Myrtle
Grevillea
Correa
Lilly
