Adding a third name, does the birth certificate get fully changed?

Hi all,

My DC is coming on to four months old soon.
Can I get a third name added and will this change the birth certificate?

From what I read online seemed like that would be the case if done in the first 12 months. But wanted to make sure. Before my child has to live life with names showing as added.

Thank you for the advice.

Are you adding a middle name?
e.g. Noah James McQuestion to Noah James Oliver McQuestion

Questions13 · 18/04/2025 14:01

@EcruCardiganyes. Basically im wanting to add the "Oliver" DC already he s a first and second name.

You can add another name, but it will show at the bottom of the birth certificate in space 17, and this will become his legal name. The box where the original name was will stay the same, so it will always show that there was a change made after the original registration.

I can't find the exact page, @Questions13 , but if you contact your local register office, they will know.

If you need to go through deed poll to do it (which I don't think you do), don't, as it will mean it won't be on his birth certificate.

Before my child has to live life with names showing as added. seems a bit strong, unless you have a genuine reason for adding the name.

Correct a birth registration: What corrections can be made - GOV.UK

This is the page I was looking for.

@EcruCardiganthanks for the link and information. No wouldn't need a deed poll but would make sure. I heard that's been a mission for people.

Hahah my wording was a bit strong. My partner is not a fan of the idea of doing something, if the changes show.

@Questions13 , the changes will show, but not in a big way.
The example I can think of is of a baby who was registered as Tadgh, which was a typo, corrected to Tadhg. (not the actual name, but that sort of change)

Once it's on the BC,apply for a passport for him, then use the passport for ID.

I wouldn't change it. Middle names aren't used other than for things like court appearances.

I think what would happen in your case is that Noah's certificate would remain the same, but section 17 would have Noah James Oliver McQuestion in it.

Questions13 · 18/04/2025 18:42

@EcruCardigan thanks so much, really appreciate all the advice and information. That's perfect then, I don't think it seems like a big deal.
It's become a sentimental reason for me, so I really want to add the third name.
