Hello! My husband and I really like the name Sandy for a girl BUT in my opinion it sounds more like a nickname. What do you think of Alexandra with the NN sandy?

Thanks for your opinions!

Love it and you could also use Lexi as a nn

Mamma2025 · 18/04/2025 09:35

Love it. We’re had Alexander as a middle name. It’s classic, beautiful, epic, and you can be flexible with nicknames.

urghhh47 · 18/04/2025 09:38

Love Alexandra and Sandy as a nn. A classic name with lots of options and one that suits a baby, child and adult.

Coffeetostart · 18/04/2025 09:38

Totally love the name Alexandra, not so keen on diminutive form Sandy. Have you thought of other abbreviations for Alexandra if you choose to shorten it?
Congratulations on your pregnancy🌸

merrymelodies · 18/04/2025 09:39

My name is Alexandra. I love it. My friends call me Alex. No other nickname seemed to stick, except Alicat in my teens.

BoleynMemories13 · 18/04/2025 09:43

Alexandra is a lovely traditional name. Really dislike Sandy though, there are so many nicer nn options for Alexandra.

Obviously it's up to you though. As long as you both like it, that's all that matters.

Moreteaandchocolate · 18/04/2025 10:20

Love Alexandra and the nn Sandy is a nice change from Alex.

Beautiful

A friend has a DD called Sandy. I like it.

REDB99 · 18/04/2025 11:42

My DD has Alexandra as a middle name, it’s a lovely name and has options for different nick names.

Needspaceforlego · 18/04/2025 11:43

Love it.
It also gives the option of Alex if she decides she doesn't like Sandie although I love Sandie.

mummyto9angels · 18/04/2025 11:46

Beautiful name. I also love Alexandria

Conkerjar · 18/04/2025 11:54

Prefer the full name, not a fan of Sandy. Perception of names changes depending on the owner though.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 18/04/2025 11:56

Sandy could also be derived from Sandra (although I guess this in itself is a corruption of Alexandra) or Cassandra, but Dubliner as a per form of Alexandra best. Makes a change from so many Lexis.

Summertimeblahness · 18/04/2025 11:58

It’s lovely although I prefer Alexandria.

EmotionallyWeird · 18/04/2025 18:34

I like Alexandra and I don't dislike Sandy, but my advice would be to only use Alexandra if you would be happy with her choosing to use a different short form one day.

I have no idea how "Dubliner" got in there! Should be "I prefer".

Beautiful

Love Alexandra, not keen on Sandy. But if you’re ok with the fact that she might choose other shortenings when she’s older, it’s great!

LilyJosephine · 18/04/2025 21:20

Lovely - makes a nice change from the Alex/Lexi shortenings and Alexandra is such as a classic. I’d think you’d have to use Sandy from day 1 though - as if you introduce her as Alexandra too, people might try to use more common shortenings (and obviously she might choose one of those herself when older).

Firsttimebabymummy · 18/04/2025 21:45

Love it! I'm biased as have an Alexandra.

tfu · 18/04/2025 22:24

Also have an Alexandra but we use numerous nicknames (Al, Ali, Lexi, Alex, sometimes Dave of she’s not listening to me!)

telestrations · 18/04/2025 23:01

Lovely. Sasha is another NN for it

Catopia · 22/04/2025 13:08

We chose Alexandra because of the range of nicknames available to her: cute/feminine/neutral, modern/classic, and because it "works" internationally and is a little unusual (won't have 6 in her class) but a traditional, recognised name.

I think you do have to be prepared for her to decide that she's not going to be Sandy once she gets to school, and is going to intentionally pick - or have picked for her by friends - one of the other numerous possible diminutives though!
