girls names-stick to traditional?

What do you think of Elliott for a girl? I read about a woman artist named Elliott (who happens to be a charming, pretty young mother) and I think it sounds kind of cute. In practicality, is that too strange? I'm not an "out-there" sort when it comes to names, but I don't know...my dh also likes Harper or Alcott for a dd, but I'm not sold on those yet.

My more trad. list includes names like Helena, Georgia, Emilia, Annabella, Anna-Claire, Carolina, Cate, Madeline - but I don't know if these are overused in the UK since I'm not from here. Basically we just can't come to a decision! What do you think?

Helena is a beautiful name, one I've earmarked for potential future dd should I ever have one! Is not particularly prevalent.
I don't like Elliot for a girl. Sorry.

lynn1 · 16/05/2008 12:01

I don't think I could call MY dd that either. It's just too boy-ish.

Elliot, Harper and Alcott are all, well, surnames. It's becoming more common to give them as first names, esp in the US, but I really wouldn't, particularly not for a girl.

Your trad list are all at least used in the UK (although Kate is the more usual spelling and Anna-Claire is a compound I haven't seen before) - some are very popular indeed.

PestoMonster · 16/05/2008 12:05

I like Elliott for a girl, but definitely not for a boy. Really like the name Emilia and wanted that for dd1, but dh didn't like it enough. Also, it is not that common here, although Amelia is a little more well used.

HonoriaGlossop · 16/05/2008 12:06

Helena is beautiful, classy and stylish

More than can be said for Elliot, Harper or Alcott I'm afraid

PestoMonster · 16/05/2008 12:06

Whoops, meant to say I like Elliott for a boy definitely NOT for a girl

PrimulaVeris · 16/05/2008 12:13

Elliott deffo a boy name, NOT suitable for a girl

All your trad list names are nice, tho' Cate unusual spelling (usually Kate) - though you could go for Catherine/Katherine and abbreviate. Georgia is very popular - I know loads!

VictorianSqualor · 16/05/2008 12:17

Georgia is really popular, it exploded about 5years ago.

Emilia, I like, it's another that will be really popular in the next few years though, so it depends if you want something different.

Annabella, I like, alot, I also like Arabella.

Not keen on Anna-Claire, at all.

Carolina, nice, it reminds me of the song by Shaggy though (MiL's name is caroline)

I think after the madeleine mcann stuf I'd be put off naming my child madeleine.

I like Catherine, shortened to Cate.

Elliot is a boys name.

dizzydixies · 16/05/2008 12:27

I actually like it
can be shortened to Ellie/Elle/Lottie

belgo · 16/05/2008 12:28

Elliot, Harper, Alcott - all dreadful for a girl.

Helena, Georgia, Emilia, Annabella, Anna-Claire, Carolina, Cate are all fine, but I would steer clear of Madeline because ot the McCann case., which is a shame because it's a lovely name.

belgo · 16/05/2008 12:29

Carolina though reminds me of the American state. Prefer Caroline or Carolyn.

lynn1 · 16/05/2008 12:29

thanks all! didn't know Georgia was getting up there in popularity. And wasn't aware of the Shaggy song. That's why it's good to ask these things...

dizzydixies · 16/05/2008 12:30

harper and Alcott not to my taste though

the others are all fine, safe, nice traditional names

lynn1 · 16/05/2008 12:31

Yes, I like Carolina with the Spanish pronunciation (car-oh-lee-na), however no one would probably pronounce it that way since we are not Spanish/Latin!

I really dislike the whole surnames-as-a-first-name thing, as well as boys-names-as-girls-names.

Helena is beautiful. I also like Rachel, Imogen, Clara, Claudia and Sophie.

bluefox · 16/05/2008 14:52

Agree - these names are very 'surnamey'. We also seem to have a proliferation of Taylors and Mackenzies around too.

RainyWednesday · 16/05/2008 14:57

There's a (blonde, female) Elliot in Scrubs. There was a thread about this a couple of days ago and I'm warming to it. I like Harper a lot - makes me think of Harper Lee, not a surname. Alcott is a bit surname-ish though (as in Louisa May!).

For some reason your trad list made me think you were American - then I got to the end of the paragraph and you said you weren't from the UK! I think they're all nice, though maybe considered a bit posh here, apart from Cate and Madeline - try sticking the word "Lady" in front of them to see what I mean!

janeite · 16/05/2008 14:57

Sorry but Elliot, Harper and Alcott are not nice at all.

Helena and Anabelle are lovely - and not too common in the UK.

chunkychips · 16/05/2008 14:58

I like traditional names and no, they aren't overused here anymore, more's the pity. Out of those, I would choose Helena. Don't much like Harper, Elliot or Alcott. Like Rachel as well Sidge.
