Ooh I love both.

I think Raphael is a bit more daring/ unusual, so I'd go for that

Reddelilah · 09/04/2025 11:50

The nicknames for Raphael aren’t nice, especially Raff - Riff Raff

Nico is lovely, especially short for Nicholas

GoldenRosebee · 09/04/2025 12:01

I like longer name, so I would choose Raphael.

This.
Raphael gets said as Raffa-yell. it's ok if you are Spanish.

I like the nn’s for Raphael better than the full name (which is a bit “frilly” to me). I think I’d choose Nico (but I’d use as short for Nicholas personally)

They both sound pretentious on non Latin Brits.

If you must then you could call him Nicholas and shorten it to Nico.

Gall10 · 09/04/2025 14:04

Nico is what Jimmy King calls his wife on Emmerdale. His wife is fab but would get so much stick on mumsnet!

I agree with this. Lovely names but a little much on the average pasty Brit (me and my future children included).

DuckieDodgyHedgyPiggy · 09/04/2025 14:18

Both gorgeous. I've always loved Raphael though so would probably go for that. Go for the you love the most and ignore the nay-sayers. Not every boy needs to be called Oliver.

Yes me too I'm afraid. To me Raphael is an old master Italian painter, a Spanish tennis player or a teenage mutant ninja turtle, and Nico is a German F1 driver. Either are ok if you have continental European or Hispanic heritage but as per PP for a bog standard pasty brit they sound a bit odd to my ears. I'd go with Nicholas nn nic or Nico or if you like raf/rafi as a nickname you could use Rafferty or Rafe/Ralph as full name (or indeed I think Raf could be a stand alone name...)

Jujujudo · 09/04/2025 15:12

Nico is harder to shorten, I’m not crazy about shortened names unless it’s that person’s choice… and Raphael could be Rafi or Rafe - if that’s not an issue then I love it as a name! Both gorgeous!

Raphael

Bournetilly · 10/04/2025 02:55

I prefer Nico but like Raph for a nn.

falalalalaaaaaaaa · 10/04/2025 03:21

Definitely Raphael. Love the nickname Raphy, but you could also do Rafe or Raph.

mathanxiety · 10/04/2025 04:35

Raphael. A classic.

Nico is faddy/ trendy.

orangeblosssom · 10/04/2025 10:49

Both nice names

Reddelilah · 10/04/2025 13:50

Nicholas is a much nicer alternative imo
