What do you think of Dennis n Denny? Or maybe just Denny on its own?

I just keep thinking Dennis the Menace.

IHateWasps · 01/08/2025 14:35

Dennis is a dreadful name.

Ignore them @LouSutt! I’m starting to regret that we only used it as a middle name.

I’m always a bit confused by the mention of Dennis the Menace, to my mind no worse an association than Horrid Henry and Henry was 14th most popular name last year!

There are numerous alternative associations with Henry. There are far fewer for the less common Dennis so more people will immediately think of Dennis The Menace. Plus Dennis The Menace has been around for much longer than Horrid Henry and there’s also the American comic, Dennis The Menace.

Dirty Den

deeahgwitch · 01/08/2025 14:41

Denis is the first name of a very well known but unpopular businessman in Ireland.
The Irish equivalent of Private Eye, The Phoenix, calls him Dinny.
If you’re in Ireland I wouldn't use it for a new baby. 😀

I really like Denis / Dennis, nickname Denny.

Have to agree with the Danny thing though…

OneNeatBlueOrca · 01/08/2025 14:44

There was a Colin in my class at school. Nobody batted an eyelid. It was just his name.

Don't see many baby Colin's now. What you do see is an abundance of Teddy's and other ridiculous names.

Dennis is an unusual choice but only because it's become dated. It will work on a grown man. No one will bat an eyelid at a thirty year old Dennis for example. He ll probably be the only one in his class if not his school.

At least he won't be another teddy or ollie, or archie or any other bland cute nicknames that are given as first names instead of names

Are you taking the piss? A dog - fantastic. A child, just NO.

Branleuse · 01/08/2025 14:47

I love it

pinksky78 · 01/08/2025 14:57

No it's terrible

Firebird83 · 01/08/2025 16:24

Seems like people either love it or hate it!

Well yes of course. Henry VIII is one of the most obvious, and he was famously a good bloke 👍🏻

It’s nothing to do with him being a good guy. It’s a very common name and there have been many kings called Henry so though he may be the most famous, there are numerous other men called Henry(Royal and others) to associate the name with and it's more of a classic and more commonly used than Dennis has been.

It’s like the difference between Rose(As in Rose West) and Myra (Hindley.) Rose will not immediately make everyone think of Rose West because it’s much more common and it has far more alternative associations and people are much more likely to know one, unlike the more unusual and less common, Myra.

It's rare nowadays but I kind of like it. I had a friend called Dennis when I was little (he'd be about 55 now, I think) who was the quiet, sensible one in a family of rather wild boys, and it still makes me think of him. I definitely prefer it with two Ns, too many boring politicians and politicians' husbands have been called the version with one N.

And one n makes it look like a close relative of penis.

Dennis has very old-mannish associations for me (and not particularly inspiring old men at that). I'd have put it firmly in the "names that maybe will never be revived" camp.

That said, I actually really don't like Daniel or Damian or Darius and don't understand why Dennis is any worse really. I suppose Daniel can be Dan, which isn't a bad name. But generally speaking "Duh" just isn't a good opening sound for a name imo.

JillyGiraffe · 02/08/2025 01:56

I know a Dennis in his 30’s and it really suits him - his nickname is Den, but I think Denny works too if that’s what you’d like to call little one :)
