Thoughts? It’s our top boys name! I am 23 weeks pregnant :)

I like Jude, it is popular though. It definitely doesn't make me think Jew and I don't think it's feminine, in fact I think of it as a masculine name. I always think of Jude Law.

beasmithwentworth · 02/04/2025 16:40

I have a 15 year old jude. He goes to a large London secondary school and there is only 1 other Jude that he knows. Yes maybe there will be more younger Judes coming through the ranks. I picked it as I really liked the name. There was no hint of it becoming popular back then but as someone said - all it Takes is one person in the public eye for it to become popular. It’s a bit annoying but taking the name and the sound / simplicity of it - I still really love the name and it suits him perfectly. I don’t have any regrets.

Doolallies · 02/04/2025 16:41

Like. Do know a 5 yo and 3 yo Jude

Ab1ga1L3 · 02/04/2025 18:52

Love it. One of my top choices.

Neweverything25 · 02/04/2025 18:55

Fine, I know male and female Judes, I think it sounds good, nice and short monosyllabic so people won't shorten it and they will also mostly know how to spell.

CountFucula · 02/04/2025 19:00

Love it!

It’s the German word for Jew. I’m not keen at all

Surely it only means jew if pronounced in the German way? If you pronounce it in English, as "Jood" it's just the name Jude. Dominics who are shortened to Dom aren't named after the German for cathedral, they are called Dom.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 02/04/2025 19:13

Nah. (Na na nana na naaaa)

PurpleChrayn · 02/04/2025 19:17

I dislike it. Reminds me of what was written on yellow stars during the Holocaust.

But when it’s written down, it reads Jew to a German speaker. Perhaps this doesn’t matter if the op’s son has no plans to work in or do business in Germany, but it’s good to be aware imo

LilyJosephine · 03/04/2025 01:45

Nah, it’s just so trendy imo (albeit a trend that really kicked off 20 years ago because of a celebrity) and I dislike trendy names personally as they risk dating. I suppose the Hey Jude reference might be cute but the Jude the Obscure classic novel and Nazi “Jude” references are less pleasant and I don’t really like the sound of it either personally (rude, nude etc).

Sorry to be such a downer 🤣 How about similar John or Joel? Far less commonplace than Jude now in schools. Or if you’d prefer something very timeless, then James always works and it’s not as popular as it used to be.

It will become increasingly popular due to Bellingham, who is already the most globally famous English player since Beckham and will probably be the next England captain.

David never took off though!

Emanwenym · 03/04/2025 09:09

@PrincessOfPreschool , it's always in use, and wasn't unusual enough to start a trend.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 03/04/2025 09:18

Lots of boys called jude here, it is too try hard imho. Jude the obscure, no thanks

Bowling4soup · 03/04/2025 09:29

I like it. Hey Jude

Emanwenym · 03/04/2025 09:30

I think it compares to Theo. Theo was unusual, then Theo Walcott hit the headlines. Lots of parents thought it was a bit different only to find they weren't the only ones.

You could say the same of Jude. I only know one David younger than 75 and he's 5!

NearlyThere91 · 03/04/2025 21:44

I love it. So many names have another meanig in a different language. Pippa means to ... baby dance... in Swedish for example. Jude is pronounced yoo-deh in German.

NearlyThere91 · 03/04/2025 21:50

It's also a Saint's name/ chapter in the Bible. I think people need to remember this. It's a very historic name with a lot of significance to the Catholic community, and to dismiss it as trendy is rather ignorant.

Jude Bellingham played for Dortmund for 4 years also... a German team...

ThisUniqueDreamer · 03/04/2025 21:54

Love it.

Na... na na na na na na 😌

ItsCalledAConversation · 03/04/2025 21:58

I love it. I know one male Jude primary school age. And a female Jude in her 40s. Suits them both amazingly well. Gorgeous name!

Baby dance...you mean shag?

I do indeed. Pippa means that in Swedish.

I think it's obviously really important to be aware of written meanings of names in other languages but this forum seems to be very Jude focused and there are literally endless examples of names meaning something in another language. Verbally, it's very different in German.

Jude's a gorgeous, classic Saint's name in my opinion.

We are all absolutely entitled to opinions of course.

ThatRubyZebra · 03/04/2025 22:21

Think it’s such a lovely name, likely will be our son’s name!

Love the point about religious significance for Catholics. My nanny used to pray to Saint Jude when she lost her glasses
