Recently started liking the name Louis for unborn DC3.
Only thing is I really don’t want people to end up calling him Lewis as that isn’t a name I love.
does anyone here have this name for their LO and how often does this happen? All the correcting would drive me mad!!

I like it. Most people know how to say Louis

NuitDeSable · 01/04/2025 10:13

Louis is pronounced Loo-ee, so only the ignorant will say 'Lewis'!

AmusedLemur · 01/04/2025 10:32

See my friend’s husband, and my cousin (two different people) are both named “Louis” pronounced Lewis.

They are always correcting people because majority of people do pronounce Louis and louie rather than Lewis.

I don’t think the mispronunciation will happen too often.

Moreteaandchocolate · 01/04/2025 10:57

I love the name Louis and have only ever heard it pronounced Loo-ee.

spiderlight · 01/04/2025 10:59

My DH is a Louis and he very, very rarely gets 'Lewis', even though we're in Wales where Lewis is more common.

Bownessbay · 01/04/2025 11:03

I have heard people mispronounce it but I think since prince Louis it probably happens a lot less.
An unpopular MN opinion but you could spell it Louie. A friend's DC has this spelling and it easily solved the problem!

Bluelavenders · 01/04/2025 12:24

Isn’t Louie becoming the more popular spelling in the UK, because that spelling works better outside of France?

Lalaghja · 01/04/2025 12:59

I have a Louis. I had the same concerns as you, but if happens very rarely. He says at school a teacher will sometimes ask if he is Louie or Lewis, but otherwise it’s not really an issue. A couple of times at the doctors he’s been called Lewis. I of course think it’s such a gorgeous name, and it suits him well.
Louie is the more popular spelling in the UK but I personally think that spelling loses a lot of the names charm!

In some countries it is pronounced as Lewis though so I think calling them ignorant is unfair.

Bluelavenders · 01/04/2025 15:45

Louis is pronounced Lou-is in many European countries. Also the city of St Louis is pronounced with an S. These people must all be ignorant Grin

VeryQuaintIrene · 01/04/2025 15:47

In the US, it's usually pronounced Lewis, FWIW.

I’d go with this too. I know a Louis pronounced Lewis and it drives me absolutely mad.

PurpleChrayn · 01/04/2025 15:50

I know two Louies.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 01/04/2025 15:51

Well, they are the same name! Lewis is just how the English have always pronounced it. They are both clones from ‘Clovis’ , the name of the (probably) first of the Merovingian kings of France. The initial C was dropped in the early Middle Ages.

I don’t suppose anyone really wanted to know that…..

PurpleChrayn · 01/04/2025 15:50

I know two Louies.

Me too. Both are pets (not mine) 😂

It's not my cup of tea as a name, but I prefer the Louie spelling to Louis.

Tiggy321 · 01/04/2025 15:53

My son is Louis. He got called Lewis quite a bit in UK but then we moved to a French speaking country and it’s all good ! I love the name - classic but not super popular

babymaybebaby · 01/04/2025 15:54

My brother is Louis, most people know the name.

babymaybebaby · 01/04/2025 15:55

Don't like Louie spelling. There are so many famous Louis, I don't really understand how people think it's Lewis.

True, but I've always heard the men's name pronounced as Lewis in 30 years living here - pronunciation and spelling are strange beasts.
