Are names with same sounding ending ok?

Hello. I was wondering what people's thoughts are with sibling names ending with the same letter?
What do you think of these below names? Comment not if you like the names or not, but if they sound ok together for siblings?

For example:
Toby and Henry
Theo and Arlo
Felix and Alex
Luca and Ezra

Obviously doesn’t really matter, but I’d say varies on case by case basis eg Felix and Alex and Theo and Arlo might be a bit too similar for me but the others fine. Wouldn’t really occur to me if someone else’s kids though!

Keiththecatwithamagichat · 24/03/2025 14:06

I think they all sound fine although I would say Alex is quite traditional and Felix quite modern so I wouldn't necessarily put those two together, but not because of the X sound.

I just want to say that I have a name that's not like my brothers at all but has similar vowel sounds at the end.

Our childhood was an endless game of 'was it me you called' when our parents (or anyone really) shouted out name upstairs or across playgrounds.

That might not bother you at all but it's something to bear in mind.
Now we're all grown it doesn't come up much but as a teenager I was very grumpy about having to go all the way downstairs to find they had wanted my brother instead!

Moreteaandchocolate · 24/03/2025 15:36

Two names ending in “ie / y” or “a” sound good / fine as these are such common endings. The examples of names ending in x or o stand out more as these are rarer endings, so I’d personally avoid using two of those.

Is Felix that modern? Only famous Felix I can think of is Mendelssohn and he's pretty old/dead. Appreciate Alexander is probably a fair bit older.

I find it more difficult when they start with the same letter/sound rather than end similar, me and my sister are Jayde and Jodie and we constantly get mixed up, whereas my nieces are Darcie and Lexi and they never do!

MystyLuna · 24/03/2025 18:34

I don't think I have ever noticed when siblings have the same last letter.
Currently sat here trying to work out if I do know any.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 24/03/2025 19:20

Just use the name you like.
I'm not keen on marching names like Arthur and Martha or Noah and Naomi, but I have friends with matchy-matchy names and it doesn't really matter - the second one was meant to have a completely different name but their mother had 'one of each' not 'two of the same'.

VenusClapTrap · 24/03/2025 19:56

I wouldn’t put Alex and Felix together. Theo and Arlo is borderline. The others are fine.

LoudPlumDog · 24/03/2025 23:31

I avoided, my three have E sound, T sound and A sound.

SquashedMallow · 24/03/2025 23:36

Your examples don't sound closely matched to be fair.

Although, I did work with someone who's children were called 'Marley and Harley ' (and no they weren't actually 'rough' 😜) I think it sounded a bit silly to be honest. Grandparents were always getting tongue tied calling out their names apparently.

LilyJosephine · 25/03/2025 00:07

It’s funny but for some reason I find the O ending more matchy than the others. It’s possible that’s just because A and ie/Y ending names are much more commonplace though (so I know plenty of siblings who have those matching ending sounds). Doesn’t explain why I find the X less matchy but it might be because the O endings stand out more as they are just so trendy right now.

Anyway, long story short - yes it’s a bit matchy, but personally that wouldn’t be enough to put me off using my absolute fave names.

WellsAndThistles · 25/03/2025 00:12

It's okay unless they sound like a litter of kittens/puppies so avoid Milly, Tilly Lilly, Billy or Maisy & Daisy or Holly, Polly, Molly etc.

In real life I know siblings called Rhona and Ronan which is a bit samey to me.

Worriedgrandmasss · 25/03/2025 00:13

I never have given it any thought . My children have names that could all be shortened to ie but it has never actually happened.
Just choose a name that you like and leave it there.

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 25/03/2025 22:38

Depends on the sound - the more common it is, the less contrived it feels. Of the pairs you listed, I don't think Toby and Henry feel contrived at all. Nor would something like Kieran and Duncan, in my opinion. The others feel a bit more contrived because there are relatively few boys' names with those endings in regular use in the UK. I'd probably say the same about Marcus and Julius, or Jedediah and Josiah.

For girls, nothing unusual about two names ending with -a sounds, -y sounds or maybe -an/en sounds. Two with -ette, -ine, -ina, -ella would begin to look like a deliberate theme.

Maxorias · 25/03/2025 22:51

My kids' names all end with an S sound. So, not the actual names but it'd be something like Marcus, Jonas and Felix. I don't feel they're super matchy (I didn't particularly want to do a theme, I just happen to like names that end with that sound).

But obviously what's too matchy or not will depend on the names. Tilly and Molly for instance is ridiculous (apologies to anyone named that !)

AstonishedWaiting · 25/03/2025 22:55

I think the key test is whether they are too easily mixed up when shouted at a distance. Our old neighbours said having a Jude and a Luke was a disaster because all that transmitted to the bottom of the garden or up the stairs was a vague ‘Ooo!’ which meant that neither ever appeared when called.

YourWinter · 25/03/2025 23:11

I think Alex and Felix together is a clumsy sound, the others are ok. Like other posters, I tend to notice when names start with a similar beginning, rather than notice the endings.

When I was little I knew sisters called Jane and June, and another family with Melissa, Melinda, Melody, Melanie and Michael!

VeryConfuzzled · 27/03/2025 09:50

@YourWinter I’d have thought that the family would have gone for something like Melvin. For some reason reading Michael at the end of all those names started with Mel- made me chuckle.

UrsulaBelle · 27/03/2025 15:42

I know a Charlie and Harry and they seem perfectly fine together. Maybe not a Harry and Barry though!

Yes of course. Smile Thought you were gonna say Billy and Millie, or Timmy and Jimmy. 😆
