A girl called Nike

The mention of Juno in another post reminded me of something.

Last year I met a Swedish couple who had called their daughter Nike. They were a couple of high brow medics so they certainly weren't influenced by a pair of trainers.

Nike was the goddess of victory. I remember thinking that it's such a shame it is so associated with the sports brand beause otherwise it's a really pretty name.

I'm quite into Goddess names.

It's a silly name. I much prefer Kappa.

DiscoDizzy · 13/05/2008 15:50

We'll be bumping into someone called reebok next week.

dizzydixies · 13/05/2008 15:52

its only silly because its associated with the sports brand, if they can rise about it and call their daughter after goddess of victory then well done them

I know I wouldn't have the balls to do it

she might not thank them for it later but at least she'll be able to buy a tonne of clothes with her name on it

Sunshinemummy · 13/05/2008 15:53

I know someone who's daughter has the middle name Adidas. Unfortunately this is after a brand of trainers.

sleepdeprivationandme · 13/05/2008 15:58

A relative of mine is a teacher. A girl in her class is called Ikea.

Sunshinemummy · 13/05/2008 16:00

PuppyMonkey · 13/05/2008 16:01

Puma is quite nice..

Nancy66 · 13/05/2008 16:02

Not exactly the same.

Nike is actually an very old name - the others are just invented brand names.

My name is also the name of a well known car which came onto the market a few years ago. I had it first!

dizzydixies · 13/05/2008 16:44

is that you octavia?!?

AHLH · 13/05/2008 19:29

I get the whole goddess thing, but Nike now has massive global associations with the sportswear brand, which is the immediate association (if not only association for a lot of people). Unless she moves in very intellectual, academic circles, I have a feeling she'll spend a lot of time explaining herself.

kateri · 13/05/2008 22:07

I think it's a lovely name - bear in mind it's pronounced Neekay, rather than to rhyme with 'bike'.

A shame that trainers have rather spoilt it permanently, though!!

kiskideesameanoldmother · 18/05/2008 09:45

Is it pronounced Nike (rhymes with bike) or is it pronounced 'Nai-kee'. The goddess, afaik is the second pronounciation but the shoe brand is the first.

I fear i would always be correcting its pronounciation by the unwashed masses.

I also like the name Athena though. The names are closely linked in greek myth.

Nancy66 · 18/05/2008 11:21

in the case of the girl that i met it was pronounced "Nye Key " and not Nike to rhyme with bike.

I know an Ellesse, as in the sports brand, you'd have thought they'd have used Elise really.
