Makes me think of
Suspenders
Marks and Spencer
Frank Spencer.

Leaving aside the surname thing (which doesn’t especially bother me personally as it’s so commonplace now), I don’t think Spencer has a very nice sound for some reason - I think it’s the “ence” part maybe?

I much prefer similar style Fraser or maybe even Dexter (or actually Reid as in Spencer Reid if we are going down the TV character route 🤣) But Spencer isn’t horrible - I’ve met a few over the years, including one who would be in his late 40’s now (back then his name was considered more unusual).

It's definitely surname-as-first name, but it's been in the zeitgeist for a while - I think of the super-geeky (male) Spencer Olchin in "King of Queens" (1998) and the almost comically overprivileged "it girl" Spencer Hastings in "Pretty Little Liars" (2006). Also makes me think of the film "Spencer" (2021) which explores the imagined rebellious thought of the last-but-one Princess of Wales. That said, I don't hate it, or the obvious shortening of Spence - but see it as quite popular/ubiquitous, and probably leaning towards being read as a girls' name currently.

Brilliant name!
Ace choice!
Go for it.

Fagli · 18/03/2025 07:44

The only ones I’ve met have been antipodean and all have been shortened to Spenny. I don’t mind the name, it’s not popular, and not uncommon.

user1492757084 · 18/03/2025 11:13

I like Spencer if there is a family tradition of using it.

KayEmAy · 18/03/2025 19:01

I like it for a boy, I love it for a girl.

SoManyTshirts · 18/03/2025 19:10

I knew a Spencer at school in the 70s and another at work in the 00s, both good men. For them it was a family name passed down through the generations.

I thought modern usage was usually linked to the poet and spelt Spenser. Similar to Shelley, though I’ve only encountered that as a girl’s name.

SunDey · 18/03/2025 19:15

I'd think you were Sloaney-posh

cheapskatemum · 18/03/2025 20:36

Are you watching 1923, by any chance?

Yerdawasasausagemaker · 18/03/2025 20:45

Hard no. It’s pretty dire.

TheFormidableMrsC · 18/03/2025 20:50

I know a lovely chap whose name is shortened to Spen.

cheapskatemum · 18/03/2025 21:00

I can’t think of any Spencers that I know, I mean with Spencer as a first name. I love the work of the artist Stanley Spencer.

User0311 · 18/03/2025 21:05

I love it!

Mudkipper · 22/03/2025 19:40

mathanxiety · 22/03/2025 20:01

Emanwenym · 16/03/2025 19:22

Katherineryan1986 · 22/03/2025 20:02

My great nephew is called Spencer (he’s 6 yrs old) and his mum and dad call him ‘Spenny’ . Not keen on Spenny, but I quite like Spencer for a first name

Oldermum84 · 22/03/2025 20:06

I love it.

AccidentalLandlord86 · 22/03/2025 20:07

Estate agent. Unless you’re American. Sorry.

hideawayforever · 22/03/2025 20:50

it's horrible

missgraciea · 22/03/2025 21:24

Really like it…not sure why but I always have!

Mandarinaduck · 22/03/2025 22:14

I like it, it feels strong and unpretentious, a little bit old-fashioned but in a good way.
