How popular is the name Aria in the UK, love this name but wanted something unique.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

It’s a pretty name but it probably will date a bit, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

My name is very unique and I definitely wanted to blend in amongst the numerous Emmas, Helens and Sarahs I was at school with!

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 10/03/2025 18:01

Certainly not unusual enough to be unique. I've taught a couple.

Panickyanicky · 10/03/2025 18:02

I know several Arias/Aryas both pronounced the same here. All under 10 but mostly of Indian descent I’ve always known it as a popular Hindu name.
I think it’s really pretty and all the children I know well with the name are lovely.

pleasedonotfeedme · 10/03/2025 18:08

I know a 12 year old Aria but no others. I think it’s still pretty and unusual even if it has suddenly got more popular.

What about Aurora, Alessia or Allegra, @FairyStars90 ?

I met a little girl called Amadea a couple of years ago, and thought how unusual and pretty that was!

IdaClair · 10/03/2025 18:22

1,198 Arias in the last data, and 279 Aryas. 135 Ariyas. 92 Ariyahs. 60 Ariahs. 36 Aria-Rose. 15 Aria-Rae. 11 Aria-Mae, 10 Aria-May, 9 Aria-Grace. 7 Araiyahs. 6 Arihas. And anyone else I’ve missed.

So 1858 girls which would make it 9th most popular girls name in England and Wales with all its variations.

I love Ariadne, as an alternative.

CandyCane457 · 10/03/2025 18:26

I teach 7/8 year olds and have never come across this name in school.

ginasevern · 10/03/2025 18:33

Sorry OP, it won't be unique and it won't even be unusual. She will be one of thousands in a few years. With so many beautiful Italian names, I'd try to think of something else to be honest.

Emanwenym · 10/03/2025 18:51

Popular Names in Italy 2023 - Behind the Name lists it at 188.

SallyWD · 10/03/2025 19:05

I know two. One's about 12 and one's 7. I wouldn't say it's hugely popular.

whereimfrom · 10/03/2025 19:11

I've got an Aria, she's 7 and know of a few more around the same age but she doesn't have anyone in her school with same name so not massively popular.

I still love it x

thatmistylight · 10/03/2025 19:11

I teach and have come across only 1 in the last 5 years.

Favouritefruits · 10/03/2025 19:14

Very popular at the moment 1 in my eldest sons class, 2 in youngest sons class and 1 at ballet

Thank you I’ve been looking for a list like this!!

I know one. Adult, male, Middle Eastern heritage.

Emanwenym · 10/03/2025 20:01

@FairyStars90 , there's probably an equivalent of the ONS baby name page for Italy but the site I linked is fairly reliable.
Many of the sites aren't reliable.

You could do with the opinion of Italian mothers with young children, and I'd check that Aria works as a name in Italy. it's Air in English, which wouldn't work as a name.

Allegra is prettier IMO.

Aria on ISTAT is growing in popularity slowly in Italy. But also don’t want an overly common name in England

Only heard of it in recent years so think of it as a new, trendy name.
I know 2 under the age of 4

JuneySunshine · 12/03/2025 11:56

The number that people know/ don't know is going to depend on region/ neighbourhood/ profession etc. etc. so without being rude is pretty pointless.

Look on the ONS stats to see how common it is and if it's got more or less so recently, decide if popularity is of crucial importance to you and go with your gut.

FluffMagnet · 12/03/2025 11:57

DD had 2 in her nursery class, so they are aged 6 now.

grinchsourcream · 13/03/2025 11:52

My Aria is 17, and it was pretty uncommon when she was born, but is very popular in our region now, mainly in under 5's I would say.

SleepSleepSleepSleepSleep · 14/03/2025 05:33

My 5yo has 3 friends called Aria/Arya.Two are British Indian and the other one was named after Game of Thrones...

rachpach03 · 21/03/2025 18:55

I have worked in nurseries for 5 years and have only ever known two Aria’s, both lovely girls have always had a soft spot for the name.

APurpleSquirrel · 21/03/2025 19:01

DD is Arya - she’s 10 - occasionally met others but mostly younger children. No others in her school - will be interesting to see if there are any others at secondary school.
I had/have an unusual name & only meet the odd person with it who is a similar age to me (mid 40s) but it’s hugely popular in young children now.

Overthebow · 21/03/2025 19:03

If you want a unique name don’t choose Aria, it’s very popular at the moment.
