Currently expecting DS2.

I think we’ve narrowed first names down to Archie or Arthur but cannot decide which we prefer.

also any suggestions for middle names?

Archie, of course, with Harrison as a middle name.
Arthur is fine but my mean SIL has a nephew with the name, so obviously it is tainted.

SkaneTos · 05/03/2025 21:59

I think they are both great names!
I voted for Arthur.

Arthur Theodore
Arthur Benjamin
Arthur Mathias

Archie Benjamin
Archie Nicholas
Archie Leonard

Archie Noah was actually one I’d shortlisted! I only know one Arthur and no Archie’s! My family all prefer Arthur too, baby naming is so difficult 😬

I’d pick Archie, because I don’t like Arthur very much - I find it quite hard to enunciate properly, and it ends up sounding like “half a”. Plus, there are loads of little Arthur’s at all toddler things, whereas I haven’t met a little Archie.

OhPickle · 05/03/2025 22:24

We’re Irish so we don’t have to worry about it being pronounced “half a”, thankfully 😂

DH thinks Archie sounds ‘happier’? I just can’t decide!

Definitely Arthur.

Archie is a faddy name that will date as badly as Sharon, Linda, Tracey, Derek, Trevor, and Gerard.

Arthur Austin
Arthur Francis
Arthur Myles
Arthur Vincent
Arthur Colman
Arthur Conrad
Arthur Felix
Arthur Emmett
Arthur Henry
Arthur Edward
Arthur Adrian
Arthur Alexander
Arthur Edwin
Arthur Zachary

Arthur Benjamin
Arthur Dominic
Arthur Owen

Arthur with an Irish accent is good.

Archie is a nickname and, - just my opinion - I don't like nicknames as given names. It's sort of infantilising. Call him Archibald if you want an Archie baby.

LilyJosephine · 07/03/2025 10:51

Arthur. It’s a bit more classic; and while it’s now mostly used by young uns, you do meet a few of differing ages. Also a cool/interesting namesake in King Arthur for a young boy. If you want to make it sound more “friendly” then there is the nn “Artie” if you really want.

Apart from the occasional quite elderly gentleman (who is very likely an Archibald); Archie and similar Alfie unfortunately scream 2010’s/2020’s at the moment imo (I’m not sure they’ll stay popular so might date).

I’d go for something very timeless with Arthur, if you don’t have any family/friends you want to honour. Maybe Arthur Joseph? - then he also has the option of the nn AJ too. Or Arthur George, Arthur Michael, Arthur Daniel, Arthur Henry, Arthur William, Arthur Edward etc - all sound like they could belong to a man of any age/background.

I agree, Archie and all other boy's names ending in -ie (Mrs Hinch's Ronnie, Lennie and Vinnie come to mind) are infantile and insubstantial. I can imagine a cherubic toddler affectionately called Archie, and I can likewise see a sweet old gent sitting with a blanket on his knees in a wingback chair being called Archie by a young care assistant, but a thirty-five-year-old man with a wife and two kids, working as an ophthalmologist, with "Archie Smith" on his little framed degree certificate - absolutely not.

We need a return of the concept of a nursery name - affectionate monikers used only by those who knew you from babyhood. Too many children are going through life encumbered with flimsy nicknames on their birth certificates - and I think it's especially tragic for boys who will grow into men without access to a strong man's name.

Lexiestar6778 · 08/03/2025 19:39

I vote Archie.

the snobbery in the comment above. One of the most successful men I know is called Archie, just Archie not Archibald on his BC

Zeldasie · 10/03/2025 14:57

I don't like Archibald or Archie at all.

So my vote goes to Arthur (no idea how to actually vote on the app)

Zeldasie · 10/03/2025 14:59

Agreed. What adult men want their official name to be Teddy 🧸 or Archie or Stevie?

DuchessOfNarcissex · 10/03/2025 15:11

@Lexiestar6778 , are you in Scotland? I think ir sounds a lot better in a Scottish accent.

@Zeldasie , but the names will be quite ordinary names when today's babies are adults.
I would never have picked my name for a baby. The name is OK and I like it because it is my name.

choinka · 10/03/2025 15:20

I love the Arthur name

FannyAndAlexander · 10/03/2025 15:21

@choinkaI do agree.

I agree with Arthur or Archibald and Archie as a short form. Arthur for preference

YourAmberFawn · 10/03/2025 22:16

Archie for me personally, but I like both.

Also, what does DS2 mean? Seen it used a lot on here and I just don’t understand the abbreviation!!
