Hey!!! Big indophile here (India lover) What do you guys think of this name? It was the name of the a friend of mine I knew in London, and I’d really love it and appreciate it if you would share your thoughts on it, for the name of a character I’m imagining. Thoughts???😘

If it's not a baby then go for it. It just reminds me of caviar

olympicsrock · 05/03/2025 06:27

Kavya is an aloof woman , a bit haughty, wealthy ( caviar) .

don’t particularly like it and wouldn’t use as a baby name .

redphonecase · 05/03/2025 06:29

If you can't pronounce a name, don't inflict it on your child.

Neveranynamesleft · 05/03/2025 06:30

Nope, sounds totally made up and just odd.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 05/03/2025 06:32

Awful.

TheLadyMaud · 05/03/2025 06:39

Sounds like Cava. As someone with a slightly unusual name that is mispronounced c 80% of the time, I'd advise against. It's really bloody tedious having to teach everyone meet how to say your name properly.

MangshorJhol · 05/03/2025 06:39

Ok Indian here it’s a beautiful name. It means poetry. There are other variants like Kavita which is more common. But if you just like the sound of the name rather than its actual meaning (Kavya is like a more formal version of poetry- almost more flowery poetry if that makes any sense) then I wouldn’t use it. Unlike Western names most Indians/South Asians give names based on the meaning of the name, its connotation.

MangshorJhol · 05/03/2025 06:40

And I would say Kah-vya. The second syllable is shorter than the first.

SallyWD · 05/03/2025 06:42

It does sound like Caviar. My children have Indian names (DH is indian) but we chose names that sounded more western, as they're growing up here. There are so many beautiful Indian names!

Ueya · 05/03/2025 06:45

It’s a lovely name, my friend has the name she pronounces it like @MangshorJhol short on the second

hattie43 · 05/03/2025 07:09

Fish eggs

HugoYorway · 05/03/2025 07:09

Reminds me of Kaviar or Kavapoo

AmusedBouched · 05/03/2025 07:21

I know a couple of people with that name (I’m Indian) and think it is a beautiful name. Agreed though that you should like the meaning of the name though.

Beautiful name, with a deep meaning; go for it if it's for an Indian character.
I am Indian origin and love it and understand the meaning of the name.
I know a girl called Kavya ( actually I know three ) who is a very kind, beautiful girl who happens to be an excellent dancer as well.

SemperIdem · 05/03/2025 09:52

It is painful how immediate the posts made by people who clearly didn’t even bother reading the op properly arrived, and those who wear cultural ignorance with pride.

What sort of person is the character you’re thinking of, op? In my head, you’re writing a youngish professional with a job leaning towards creative? It’s quite a sleek sounding name.

PriyankaMaria · 05/03/2025 18:06

oh ok. others???????

OP if you're naming characters for a piece of writing, just remember that character names are a shorthand way for readers to understand the character. So beware giving characters names which are outside their ethnicity, unless you are prepared to spend pages explaining why the parents decided to name their child what they named her. Names ought to signal age, background, ethnicity, social class, all without having to waste words 'explaining'. So for example, you wouldn't tend to give a teenage character the name Julie or an eighty year old woman the name Nevaeh.

SkaneTos · 05/03/2025 18:14

Pretty name!
To me it looks almost like the Finnish word for coffee, "kahvia".
