Would like something with a bit of a witchy vibe, would love something Welsh, Scottish, or Irish

I am Welsh and my favourite Welsh boys names are Macsen, Osian and Taran.

@Persista , Eleri is currently very popular for baby girls. Baby names in England and Wales - Office for National Statistics. The list has some ones I wasn't expecting.

I know far too many, all Eh-Lerry or Lerry (Most of them Eleri X. at school.), plus there are so many El- names around.

Yes I know very many too, all my age (middle aged!), although I think I know of one young one, now I come to think of it. She's in Cardiff.
I just think it's one of those slightly old-fashionedy names that are actually really pretty, and could easily be rehabilitated!

Jac y Jwc!

NefiBlw · 07/03/2025 15:38

@Persista , as I pp, it's currently popular. i suspect that it might be popular ? outside the Welsh-speaking communities. I just can't imagine a baby Eleri or Dylan/Osian/Gethin.

Jac y Jwc? @Mwydryn Grin. Tomos Caradog is way cooler.

@Mwydryn , I wanted to suggest Gwion but thought 'How would i explain how to say it?' It's like wee-on but with a G on the front! Myrddin is great too.

Pwyll, Urien, Efnisien

Gwern and Bleddyn are both terrific.

Edited

of all the names in your post, Gwion is the only one I didn't wonder how to pronounce

JustBec · 07/03/2025 16:22

I like Ioan. My grandfather was Evan (pronounced ee-van) and I’m rather fond of Ianto (yan-toe) which is the nickname for Evan.

Rhidian/Rhydian

Yes

NefiBlw · 07/03/2025 16:30

Evan (pronounced ee-van) It's usually Evv-un

We have an Ifan and the Ee-van pronunciation is misleading, as it's more YV-ann. It doesn't sound like Ee Van or rhyme with Diane

NefiBlw · 07/03/2025 16:47

@merryhouse ,
Myrddin - Murr-thin (Murr like in Murray, thin - like then but with an i)
Pwyll - forget it. The wy is a diphthong, and the name is one syllable. Nearest I can explain is Pw = pu in push, yll - like ill but the LL is like a German ch (not Scottish ch). Great name though.
Urien - IRR-yen
Efnisien - Ev-NISH-enn
Gwern - the er is like the err in error/terror
Bleddyn -BLETH-in TH like in the/that

BestIsWest · 07/03/2025 16:56

Bleddyn is a great name,
I’ve never heard Efnisien before but I love it.

NefiBlw · 07/03/2025 17:02

@BestIsWest , Nisien is much nicer. They were twins.

@merryhouse , most of those names don't sound great if you don't speak Welsh and can say R. Gwern sort of ends up as Gweh-un or Gwurn otherwise.

Treaclewell · 07/03/2025 17:08

I thought Efnisien was someone negative in the Mabinogion.
I once had a liking for Estyn, but Welsh Ofsted nobbled it. What about iestyn?

KnickerlessParsons · 07/03/2025 17:25

Meredydd, Grufydd, Taliesin, Caradog, Iolo, Tudur, Meirion,
