Using a mutual friends very unusual baby name…

My husband and I can’t agree on boys names. The only one we both really like is very very unusual and was used by friends of friends. We never see them and they’ve moved to the other side of the country. However, we do follow each other on social media.

I’d be tempted to block them on sm and crack on, but I think our mutual friend will make it weird. They are a very gossipy couple.

There is a Welsh and Irish spelling and pronunciation of the name that we have toyed with. However, we like this particular version as it’s the name of a local beauty spot that means a lot to us.

What is the etiquette in this situation? Message and ask for permission? Ignore the fact and use the name anyway and accept our mutual friend will gossip but it will blow over? Use the alternative that is a bit halfhearted? Ta!!

The etiquette in this situation is to not name your child after a local beauty spot.

Not only is it tacky, people will forever ask you/him if he was conceived there.

I think this thread might be a wind-up. Stealing a friend's baby name,Welsh names, Irish names, named after a place are all thread topics that tend to lead to disagreements/opinions.

No, good guesses but not a boy Grin

Hecate? Niobe?

Message and ask for permission? They don't own rights to the name! Doesn't even sound like they're that good a friend's so why even care?

If it was the name of one of your friend or family's kids then I'd be saying avoid it but a friend of friend who you may never see again and lives miles away, crack on.

One of my children has a name from Greek literature. It's very very unusual in the UK. A friend of a friend that doesn't even read English literature used it. They pronounce it incorrectly. I rolled my eyes and was a bit annoyed when I found out but haven't thought about it since.

Antigone? Anti-gone maybe?

Crack on, but own that you've been inspired by them just tell your mutual friend you love it and are using it too so they don't start to gossip etc

One of my DC has an unusual name. Someone (friend of friend) heard it used of my DC, liked it and gave it to her next baby.

I was delighted when I found out.

Just go for it.

Edited

I would be too! But I would hope to get credit

@CerealPosterHere I wish it was that, that would be hysterical. I think Persephone is pretty common now though?

I put this on my baby girl name list after watching naughts and crosses during lockdown, sephy is a very good nickname
