Hello. I’m looking for a name that is timeless, handsome, striking and strong for a little boy / grown up man.

Which of these do you think has that vibe :

Hugo, Vaughn, Beau, Dominic, Nico, Jude, Raphael, Cassian, Viggo, Mateo, Vasco

Thanks!

They all sound straight from a Jilly Cooper novel . Why aren’t more traditional names handsome/striking?

Nailed it.

You are trying too hard. Timeless and strong ... James, John, George, Alexander. Edward Thomas, or even Xavier!

Test the names out by shouting them out in a supermarket .. do they sound like your child?

PenneyFouryourthoughts · 03/03/2025 12:30

None of them.

What about traditional names like John, Robert, Henry, James, George or Edward?

Scottish names like Hamish, Angus, Cameron & Lachlan?

I also like Rory, Maximus (Max), Thorsten, Titus, Phoenix, Augustus, and Hunter.

ladygindiva · 03/03/2025 12:48

Dominic, Nico, Raphael are all very striking to me. The first one might be because I had a crush on one as a teen. He was gorgeous.

Dillythedallyduck · 03/03/2025 17:33

I like Hugo, Cassian and Mateo from your list.
Not sure about the handsome and striking bit tbh but I love the names.

user1492757084 · 04/03/2025 11:25

Hugo
Dominic
Raphael
Cassian

Others ..
Alexander
David
Edward

Helene8 · 05/03/2025 21:34

Surely it’s entirely dependent on the handsome striking men we all know in our different lives?

Eg I know a strikingly handsome ‘Guy’.

I would advise against naming a child and especially a future adult Beau. It’s no different to us naming a child ‘Handsome’ in this English speaking country. Not to mention I think it puts tremendous pressure on a young man..!

RosesAndHellebores · 05/03/2025 21:41

What a couple of pp's have said:

George
John
William
Edward
Thomas
Henry
James

At a push:
Magnus
Arthur
Oscar
Oliver

More out there:
Julian
Louis
Tristan
Guy
Ralph

YoungSoak · 05/03/2025 21:43

I love some of your names. Vaughan was on my list but I wasn’t brave enough. I also love Beau and Nico.

How about:

Aubrey
Leon
Gene
Townes
Gabe
Jesse

EcruCardigan · 05/03/2025 21:47

@Helene8 , me too. He's gorgeous.

CarpetKnees · 06/03/2025 00:08

None of your list.
Dominic aside, none of them are 'timeless', but are all very modern.

As pp said, if you are looking for strong and timeless, you need to be looking at
George
John
William
Edward
Thomas
Henry
James

type names, and I'd add

David
Daniel
Alexander
Mark
Peter

to that list.

Sleepington · 06/03/2025 00:25

None of the ones you have listed fit any of the criteria you require. Except perhaps if you use Hugh instead of the awful Hugo.

Look for traditional names e.g. John, James, William, Edward, Richard etc.

EcruCardigan · 06/03/2025 10:12

i don't think that Hugo is awful, but it seems to have become very popular because of the Theo/Leo/Arlo/Milo .... trend . It's definitely lost the snooty label.

Jessbow · 06/03/2025 11:09

James is strong classic and timeless
Timothy as well, but under rated- Tim is nice as an adult/youth)
Likewise Matthew Hugh George Frederick

I find your all a bit moderern and try hard

WinterFoxes · 06/03/2025 11:29

I love Raphael and think it fits your aim. Not that keen on any of the others. I like the name Jude for a man but associate it with Hardy's novel which is unbearably sad.

Yerto · 06/03/2025 12:34

I would say Dominic, Hugo, Jude and Cassian.

RogueFemale · 06/03/2025 22:39

I agree with PPs

George
John
William
Edward
Thomas
Henry
James

I'd add Nicholas.

None of the names on your list make me think of timeless, handsome, striking and strong. The general vibe is a bit wet and pretentious.

whatwouldlilacerullodo · 07/03/2025 00:01

They are all from different places! Vasco is popular in Portugal, Matteo in Italy, Viggo sounds Scandinavian, the others are broadly European, mostly from France and Italy. If you're English, they sound a bit naff and silly.
Choose something that matches your surname and heritage.

MrsSkylerWhite · 07/03/2025 00:04

Vaughan is a beautiful and much under-used name.
