Cousins with a very similar first name

Think Jack and Jaxon.

The cousins will have different surnames, this has always been the name I wanted to use (Jack) after my dear grandfather Jack however my SIL (brothers wife) hence the children not sharing a surname was pregnant first and used Jaxon.

Would you change the name you have always wanted to use or persevere and stick with the name I have always loved / has meaning. As well as the different surnames, the children will not attend the same schools as we do not live within walking distance but will see each other. They are also not the two only grandchildren so the grandparents will not just have Jack and Jaxon

I am 34 weeks pregnant and this is really causing me some over thinking, I need honest opinions please

Stop over thinking and use the name you want 😊

Nanny1983 · 01/03/2025 11:29

I don’t think they are similar enough to not use it .

NuffSaidSam · 01/03/2025 11:32

In theory, I think it's fine for all the reasons you say (you've liked the name, different surnames, different schools, different lives etc).

But for me, it would have taken the shine off the name and I wouldn't use it. I don't need my child to have a 'yooneek' type name, but I would want their name to be unique enough that they didn't have a cousin with more or less the same name.

I would find something else and use Jack as a middle name.

Snorlaxo · 01/03/2025 11:37

I think Jack will be fine as long as Jaxon is known as Jax or Jaxon rather than Jack.

If Jaxon is known as Jack then I would use Jack as a middle name.

I'd use it as you've set your heart on it. Might be worth explaining to SIL why you chose the name and that you've always wanted to use it so it doesn't cause any issues though.

My mum was the youngest of 10, a large Catholic family. Every family
has a James, Michael, a John , or for females, Margaret and Anne.

BobbyBiscuits · 01/03/2025 11:46

I think that's totally fine. I've known cousins that have very similar names. This is a bit different but I knew a set of step brothers and two of them had exactly the same first and surname! 🤣

babyfornine · 01/03/2025 11:47

It would ruin for name for me and would want my ds to have his own name not basically the same as an older cousins.

BruisedNeckMeat · 01/03/2025 11:51

I would choose a different name if it was me.

Did your brother choose the name as a tribute to the DGF?

TickingAlongNicely · 01/03/2025 11:54

I only realised last summer, when the younger child is two, that one of DDs cousins has the male version of her name. One letter different in spelling (the girls version has an 'a' on the end). They are completely different people and the similarity doesn't matter.

My cousin has a very similar name to me and my Aunt asked me and my parents when I was little if we minded if she used it - she said she loved the name so much and she hoped her little girl would grow up to be as lovely as me. I took it as a big compliment and it’s never caused any issues.

Sheeparelooseagain · 01/03/2025 12:00

In the past it was common for cousins to have the same/ very similar names but it isn't now and to prevent possible bad feeling I would use it as a middle name.

paranoiaofpufflings · 01/03/2025 12:02

You are overthinking! It's a different name, they have different surnames, don't live together, different schools, there is absolutely no issue here. Use the name you love and don't give it another thought.

FWIW, I have the exact same name as a cousin, same first name and same surname until she married. It's never been an issue at all.

EcruCardigan · 01/03/2025 14:34

Too close IMO, but if you want to use it then do.
Your SIL might start a thread though. Smile
