Middle name for Agnes??

Hey 😊

Agnes Essie vs. Agnes Elsie??

Wanted to see what people think of "Essie" as the middle name for Agnes? I know it comes across as a nickname, but it was popular as a name in its own right back in the 1920s. I just think it's really sweet, but wondering if "Elsie" is the better/more well-known option?

I voted Agnes Elsie due to Essie sounding rhyming with Agn-es as first name
Love Agnes as first name, but nickname might be Nessa or Ness or Nessie, and then Essie and Elsie sound kinda similar.

I find Agnes Elsie a slight tongue twister but maybe it's just me. Agnes Essie easier to say and I like the retro feel.

mummysmagicmedicine · 28/02/2025 13:15

How about Agnes Elise?

Moreteaandchocolate · 28/02/2025 14:21

Agnes Essie is a bit of a tongue twister to me because of the repeating “es” sound at the end of Agnes and beginning of Essie. Elsie breaks it up a bit 😊

They are both lovely names! I voted for Agnes Essie.
I know a lovely lady with the name Essie, very kind and helpful.

timoteigirl · 28/02/2025 14:59

How often would you or her ever need to say both names?

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 28/02/2025 15:03

Emerentiana.

She was st,Agnes foster sister, and after Agnes was martyred, she crept out to help bury her. The Soldiers found her, and she suffered the same fate. She and her sister are buried together in a very beautiful church in Rome.

So both these brave girls could look after your little one.

Agnes might be nicknames Nessie and you can't have Nessie Essie.
Agnes Elsie adds another letter/sound and flows much nicer.

cooljerk · 28/02/2025 15:15

Agnes Elise is gorgeous

I have never in my life (and I'm very old) heard of the name Essie in it's own right, only as a nickname for Esther - and even then it's unusual. I assume it's become trendy recently as a stand alone name. It most certainly was not common, let alone popular, in the 1920's.

Agnes Essie, as someone said, becomes one word IF you say them together, which I don't think you would often have reason to do?
You have chosen the two names you like the best, and I guess I would vote for Elsie.
I would prefer a different sound without the 's's', something like Agnes Elvira.

GiddyCrab · 28/02/2025 20:57

Sorry but Agnes is one of the worst names I've heard along with Mildred, Agatha, Maud and Ethel.

I voted Agnes Elsie.
It sounds more comfortable hearing Elsie Agnes.

I like Agnes very much. I spent years thinking I would name my daughter Agnes but it wasn’t to be.

Nessy Essie doesn’t work well, nor does Aggie Essie.

Agnes Elsie works well for me.
