Love Alexandra as a full name but not nn, is Grace too common/ popular?

Alexandra it's my favourite but will certainly be shortened to Alex/Lexie/Ally very quickly which I'm not keen on.

Grace is beautiful but ten a penny.

Alexandra is lovely, Grace is everywhere if it's not a first name it's a -Grace

Bigearringsbigsmile · 26/02/2025 15:53

Not grace. If she grows up like me ( very tall and always falling over) it will be a burden.

Moreteaandchocolate · 26/02/2025 16:12

I love both but would choose Grace if you don’t like the nns for Alexandra as these are hard to avoid.

APurpleSquirrel · 26/02/2025 16:13

I love Alexandra, but then I like the range of nn's it provides.
Grace will likely end up called Gracie too.

BebbanburgIsMine · 26/02/2025 16:44

Both names are lovely.

Why do people always assume that a name will be shortened? Until your daughter is old enough if you say her name is Alexandra, then that's her name. No-one has the right to shorten it, it's not their name. If your daughter chooses a shortened version when she is old enough, then fair enough, that's her choice.

I have a name that can be shortened, but I absolutely do not allow any shorter version to be used, I insist on my full name. My DD1 is the same, she likes her full name and will not entertain any shortened version.

Wantapotnoodle · 26/02/2025 16:49

Graces are everywhere, Alexandra is nice and gives plenty of nickname options (Alex, Alexa, Lexi/Lexie/Lexy, Andie, Ally/Allie)

pinkypankring · 26/02/2025 18:00

Alexandra is beautiful, such an array of nicknames but ultimately if you want her to be called Alexandra day to day then just tell people that.

Think of how many people you know called Jacqueline, Samantha, Francesca, Catherine, Elizabeth. These people you know as their full name and you'd never shorten it because quite simply... that isn't their name!

It's really common! And if she wants to shorten it when she's old enough, that will be her choice. It's her name after all.

KayEmAy · 28/02/2025 19:21

While I personally like Alexandra more, if you're not a fan of the nicknames I would go with Grace (which is also lovely)

This is true of me too, and why o could never use the name Grace, even though it’s nice!

I prefer Alexandra, but I think nicknames are inevitable. No one in the UK seems to be able to resist making a name as short as possible.

Every person I know with those names is known as Jackie, fran, Sam, Cathy and liz!!🤣

ExquisiteSocialSkills · 28/02/2025 20:26

Alexandra is four syllables so it’s not unreasonable to expect it will be shortened but Alex / Lex are good nicknames.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 01/03/2025 10:51

Unhelpfully, I like both! I have a Grace (I chose a one syllable on purpose)... and, on learning her name, people like to lengthen it to "Gracie".

Alexandra is beautiful, but will probably get shortened because the UK cannot seem to deal with any name longer (or shorter!) than two syllables. Start a trend and insist on her full name at all times, OP (until she is a teenager and insists on Alex or Ally)!

Despite Grace being a popular middle name, Alexandra Grace sounds very elegant.

pilates · 01/03/2025 11:28

Both are beautiful

Firsttimebabymummy · 03/03/2025 07:23

Alexandra but I'm biased as have one! She goes by her full name as too young to choose, but I do like the nns it has too.

Alexandra Grace is a lovely name.

OT85 · 03/03/2025 10:28

Alexandra Grace
or
Grace Margaret?

OP posts:
Moreteaandchocolate · 03/03/2025 12:01

Both are lovely but Grace Margaret wins for me! Alexandra is lovely but I’m less keen on the nn’s.

Raininginparadise2 · 03/03/2025 12:09

Grace 🥰

pilates · 03/03/2025 17:22

Alexandra Grace

Mudkipper · 03/03/2025 17:34

You can shorten Alexandra to Sacha.

theamooberry · 12/03/2025 17:41

Those are my two names funnily enough. Grace is classic and not particularly fancy but I've really grown to like it.. Alexandra will get shortened whether you want it to or not

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 12/03/2025 17:47

Can I suggest Alix rather than Alex if shortening? Like the Tsarina of Russia
