Our top contender is Franklin. Not Frank or Frankie which I know will more than likely happen at school but whenever I say our top name choice, there are comments such as

‘Frank is much nicer’
’Franklin is a gangster in a game’
’Franklin the turtle’
’Franklin is a surname’

is it really an ugly name? 37 weeks pregnant and want to know if our choice is not as nice as I first thought

It’s a bit late now, but don’t tell people the name before the baby is born. Someone will always make a comment you don’t like.

edit to say - Franklin is absolutely fine, don’t change it because a few people have made comments!

the first thing I think of is the turtle.. sorry! Honestly though I couldn’t care less what anyone thought of a name I loved. Wouldn’t make me love it any less. Stick to your guns and be happy with your choice.

TwoRobins · 25/02/2025 17:32

I quite like Franklin. I've never heard of said turtle, though.

Trallers · 25/02/2025 17:35

Go for it! It's a nice name on the slightly unusual.side of normal. Don't let their thoughts bother you. People think all sorts of things about baby names, but mostly voice it only if it's before birth (hence it being best to just tell them the name once baby is born). Imagine how annoyed you'll feel in 5 years when it doesn't matter any more to you, but you're stuck with your second choice of name. Go for lovely Franklin!

LizardQueeny · 25/02/2025 17:36

Have none of these people heard of FDR?

Moreteaandchocolate · 25/02/2025 17:38

No name will please everyone and especially the older generations who aren’t used to the wider range of names used these days. If people’s opinions bother you a lot then you may find it more comfortable to pick a more commonly used or classic name, but only if it will make things easier for you or if you’re sensitive to people’s reactions and might analyse what they think (seen a lot of name regret threads on here recently!) - otherwise stick with Franklin - nothing wrong with it at all.

Purplecatshopaholic · 25/02/2025 17:45

I like Franklin. They’ll no doubt get Frankie anyway whether you like it or not. No idea about the turtle though, lol.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 25/02/2025 17:47

It's a really unattractive name.

mummysmagicmedicine · 25/02/2025 17:52

DD2 is friends with a little Franklin and it suits him so much- he is quite the little character!

WaneyEdge · 25/02/2025 18:07

I like it. I always think of the ‘Peanuts’ character.

Bigfellabamboo · 25/02/2025 18:12

I think it's horrible.

Manchesterbythesea · 25/02/2025 18:20

It’s the name of a factory near where I live. That’s the first thing I think of.

RaininSummer · 25/02/2025 18:25

I like it. Frank makes me think of a grizzled old plasterer.

xWren · 25/02/2025 18:29

I love the name Franklin, it’s super cute and versatile as he ages.
Frankie is a lovely name throughout school.
Frank for when he’s Grandpa Frank.
Franklin will sound great in any professional role as an adult.

Fuck everyone else, if you and your partner like it then that’s all that matters.

TomatoSandwiches · 25/02/2025 18:47

It only really matters that you and your partner likes it.

Same

CurlewKate · 25/02/2025 18:50

I prefer Francis as a "long" for Frank. But it's your choice. Ignore!

Cattleclassy · 25/02/2025 18:57

It does make me think a little of the cartoon turtle to be honest, but he was a cute little character, nothing to dislike.
It’s also quite American but absolutely nothing wrong with either of those connections but there’s probably no harm in being aware beforehand.
eg A friend of my DD is called Amelia but discovered that this is the medical term for congenital ‘missing limb’ and she herself has a limb abnormality. I’m certain her parents would have chosen another name had they known the connection.

NuffSaidSam · 25/02/2025 18:59

I quite like it.

It's a perfectly reasonable name. There are some names that have awful connotations or are just ridiculous, but Franklin isn't one of them.

BeachRide · 25/02/2025 19:03

Character in GTAV.

Cattleclassy · 25/02/2025 19:05

Franklin Roosevelt and Benjamin Franklin are fine upstanding examples of the name :)

MotherJessAndKittens · 25/02/2025 19:08

I like it. Never heard of the turtle either. Go with what you want not what people say.

shoopshoopdedoo · 25/02/2025 19:15

It wouldn’t be for me - I love Frank and would use it as shortened form of Francis. But it doesn’t matter what I think or what anyone thinks! It’s definitely not a ridiculous or offensive choice!

Pumpkincozynights · 25/02/2025 19:16

I think Franklin is just as good as Frank or Frankie.
