Just found out we are expecting a baby boy!
Looking for some boy names that are close to Quran and have good meanings however I'm white/British and dads Pakistani so looking for something that's easy for both sides of the family to pronounce!

Any idea?!?!

@nomoretreats , had already suggested it. Smile

😂😂 it's a lovely name!

suburberphobe · 25/02/2025 01:29

^Basically choose a biblical name and there probably is an Arabic equivalent!
That's a sweeping statement.

No it's not. Jesus is called Issa in the Muslim tradition and Ishai in the Jewish tradition.

wisbech · 25/02/2025 03:34

You could use Islamic names, but pronounced/ spelt in English? Many old testament names are obviously both.

Adam
David (Dawud)
Gabriel (Jibril)
Joseph (Yusuf)
John (Yayha)
Zakaria
Aaron (Harun)
Jacob (Yaqub)

Adam/ Zak are the ones that are closest in pronunciation & spelling in Arabic & English.

@suburberphobe , some names from the Bible have equivalents but not all of them. Giving one example does not support your argument.

I doubt that any names from the New Testament's last 23 books have equivalents.

Many names from the Bible have equivalents. If someone wants an Islamic name that easily works in the UK, it’s a great starting point. It’s really not that controversial and doesn’t need to be constantly challenged.

HouseAshamed · 25/02/2025 07:38

@RainingRoses , but my post was about Basically choose a biblical name and there probably is an Arabic equivalent!.
It's a sweeping statement that isn't true.

If pp had said 'Basically choose a biblical prophet's name and there probably is an Arabic equivalent!, it wouldn't have caused me to comment.

You’re being very particular which really isn’t necessary here.

But seeing as you are so focused on semantics, I said “probably”, not “there definitely will be”.

@RainingRoses , you are derailing the thread.

@sunshine766 , you might find some inspiration in here. List of people in both the Bible and the Quran - Wikipedia
I like Ilyas and Sulayman.

I'm with you - no idea why that poster has taken such umbrage...

HouseAshamed · 25/02/2025 13:30

@LegoHouse274 , I haven't taken any umbrage. The statement wasn't true, so I challenged it.

For new testament names, will depend if Jewish (in which case will usually have Arab version) or Roman/ Greek (so no)

The main difference is that English mostly has turned the semitic Y into a J over the centuries. So Judith, not Yudit, Benjamin vs Binyamin.

FWIW, my sisters nicknamed me 'Yusuf' and my Indonesian family nicknamed me "Dul" (short for Abdullah) when I converted... Technically I took "Dawood" but it never stuck as a name

HouseAshamed · 25/02/2025 14:09

Ezra or Daniel - yes, Timothy or Philip - no

If we knew which names OP likes, or what meanings she likes, that might help.

Ooh, Idris is nice and everyone knows how to say it thanks to the delightful Idris Elba. Is it a Welsh name too or have I got that wrong?

Maybe Eris is the Welsh name you are thinking of? But that's for a girl.

HouseAshamed · 16/05/2025 22:29

@Meredusoleil , Eris is the name of a Greek goddess, and as far as I'm aware, isn't used in Wales.

Idris is a Welsh boy's name and is an Arabic boy's name.

Is is also a dwarf planet name and a Welsh family I know used it for their daughter. That's why I thought it was Welsh!

Really? I would have thought it was so obvious?
I think there's some people who go out of their way to deliberately mispronounce people's names no matter what.
