My sister is thinking of calling her baby Brontë but has heard it pronounced differently!

is it bron-tea or brown-tay?

Dd has 2 friends called Bronte both pronounced Bron-tea

Rosenkohle · 23/02/2025 14:48

It's neither BronTEE nor BronTAY imo

It's Bron-TE

Sorry I have to ask but what is the difference between BronTEE and BronTE.
If I say them out loud they sound exactly the same.

Brontee is Bron-tee (like tea)

Bronte is Bron-te (like te in tell or telephone)

Needmorelego · 23/02/2025 15:58

@Rosenkohle still can't tell the difference 🤷
Or do you mean it's more of a "Teh" sound?
Because Te at the start of Telephone to me sounds like Teh.
So BronTeh ?

mothercarebear123 · 23/02/2025 16:09

I think it's traditionally pronounced bron - tay, but I've only ever heard it pronounced bron - tea

Edited

Yes! That is what I was trying to describe - the TE is pronounced teh (like telephone or test)

So Brontë is Bron-teh

It's not Bronté (tay) or Brontee (tee)

mathanxiety · 23/02/2025 16:14

Bron-tay

cheseandme · 23/02/2025 16:17

Bronteeeee. Brontay sounds absolutely awful. My daughter is called Esme and I am so thankful that throughout her childhood and as an adult she has never been called Esmay .
Bronte really is a gorgeous name.

Ythefucknot · 23/02/2025 16:27

I know of a Brontaé which is appalling IMO, assuming it is said as it is spelt (Bron-ta-ee?)

Maybe they just thought it was (a)cute …

Bron-tay

But it's not Bronté ?!

FloppySarnie · 23/02/2025 16:34

KarminaBurana · 21/02/2025 12:10

@Emanwenym it's an umlaut.

It’s not, it’s a diaeresis. They have a different function.

ephronie · 23/02/2025 16:40

I don't know how to say it, but it's usually considered the very opposite of posh on these threads.

It's pronounced 'tea' and it was from Brunty as a pp has mentioned. I don't really like surnames as first names, personally.

bzarda · 23/02/2025 16:48

This is my name, pronounced Bron-tea. I get Bron-tay all the time and it's really irritating.

Tell your sister her daughter will spend her life correcting people! I was a shy child and used to hate correcting my teachers when they called the register etc.
I don't mind it now I'm more confident/in my 30s.

thornbury · 23/02/2025 16:50

DD went to school with a Bronte (Bron-tay), she is in her 20s now. We did live in a very middle class, gentrified area of London though!

InWithThePlums · 23/02/2025 16:52

Re Patrick Brunty changing the name, another theory is that he was a big Nelson fan. I think Brontë is a nice name anyway.

(Mind you, no umlauts for Nelson. I like the idea of Patrick being a Hyacinth Bucket type)

Marble10 · 23/02/2025 16:59

My dyslexic brain would say Bron-t. Like Brunt.. 🤦🏼‍♀️

kittyycatt · 23/02/2025 17:27

I would pronounce it Bron-tea but only because I know two people with the name! One is 30s and the other is younger.

But it could be one of those accent things like when people say bath, path differently!

mathanxiety · 23/02/2025 18:24

Rosenkohle · 23/02/2025 16:31

But it's not Bronté ?!

Yes, but I've known three girls and women with this name, and they've all been Bron-tay.

Also, right or wrong, that's the way it was pronounced by all my English teachers and all my DCs' English teachers.

forthistimeonly · 23/02/2025 19:07

I have a 25 year old Brontë -pronounced Bron-tee.
She loves her name. Her Irish family pronounce it Bron-Tay but she's not bothered by that. We also know another one.

LostMyLanyard · 23/02/2025 19:43

I know two lovely Brontë's. Both pronounced Bron-tea. Never heard anyone say Bron-tay.

It's a beautiful name when said -tea, but sounds very 'affected' with a -tay ending (to my ears anyway!)

Marcipix · 25/02/2025 12:48

I love the name Brontë. I’d buy them a jellycat brontosaurus.

I only know one, a lovely girl, teacher’s child in a pretty Dorset village.
I don’t know who said it is chavvy but I couldn’t be more surprised.
I don’t like classing children as chavvy, but if I was going to, I would lean more towards Layla-Mae type names.
