For a half Greek, half English baby girl? Living in the UK, outer London, if relevant!

I like it, but people will use Tiggy as a nickname so you'll have to be ok with that imo.

LadyCrumb · 20/02/2025 19:38

Gorgeous

SophiaSW1 · 20/02/2025 19:38

I know one. She goes by Tiggy instead as so many people don't know how to pronounce her name properly. I'd avoid it for that reason but if you love it go for it.

TidyDancer · 20/02/2025 19:39

I know one and she's definitely known as Tiggy. I absolutely love the name but it's quite a marmite one as they go.

WarmthAndDepth · 20/02/2025 19:39

Pretty.

WitcheryDivine · 20/02/2025 19:41

If you don’t know the name it’s either “anti gone” or “anti goan” so unless you’re mostly around well read types I wouldn’t.

Easypeasymacncheesy · 20/02/2025 19:43

I’ve never known how to pronounce it!

Ant-ig-oh-knee (stress on the ig)

I think it’s a lovely name but there are better stories. I mean she was a feisty dame for sure but it didn't end well.

AsanteSana · 20/02/2025 19:51

It is a beautiful name, but has the unfortunate connotation of being associated with Oedipus and Jocasta and everything which goes with that

nameXname · 20/02/2025 19:52

Nice-sounding name but very sad and rather disturbing story, ending in suicide:

Agree that it’s heavy, but I feel like this could be said for most of the more Ancient Greek names! I feel like Antigone had a lot more about her than some of the other women, at least…

I don't hate it but it's a lot to put on a kid. Penelope?

Emanwenym · 20/02/2025 20:06

It's fine @Toastwithtea .Go for it.

The Greek pronunciation is like we pronounce Penelope. Anti - gone- ee, stress the final syllable.

CuteEasterBunny · 20/02/2025 20:09

It sounds like a mould remover product.

SorrowsPrayers · 20/02/2025 20:11

Gorgeous! I also like Persephone, Calliope, Cassiopeia and Hermione.

Me too. Love them all. Classic, not overused, interesting without being out there.

LeedsZebra90 · 20/02/2025 20:18

I love it. But it will be one of those names you just have to accept will constantly be pronounced and spelt wrong. Unusual names with a more recognised shortening work well I think - if she doesn't like it she can always go by Annie.

MumblesParty · 20/02/2025 20:19

I think there’s a danger people would pronounce it Anti Gon.

I don't stress the final syllable of Penelope! I say Pen-EL-oh-pee. But maybe it's different in modern-day Greek. I was taught to say Antigone stressing the tig rather than the eee (Ancient Greek A level).

Greek people in Greece don't pronounce it that way. I know a real life Greek Antigone who doesn't speak English. Her family pronounce her name as I said. As does she.

Greeks pronounce Penelope differently to how British people do, hence why I said 'as we pronounce Penelope'

I've never heard of the name before and that's exactly how I would pronounce it.

NoseyFarkers · 20/02/2025 20:31

Ant-ig-oh-knee

Zero chance I'd have got there on my own. Would have been Ant-ee-gon to me, as I suspect it will be for a large proportion of people.

clary · 20/02/2025 20:31

@Movinghouseatlast so do you mean people in the UK when you say "how we pronounce Penelope"? bc I am in the UK and as I say, I stress the second syllable. I am pretty sure that's the standard UK pronunciation.

Even worse, the nickname might be Gonny...
