Léonie

Hi everyone,

We're thinking about Léonie (Lay-oh-nee hence the accent - DH is French btw and we spend a lot of time in France and we will be moving there in the next few years.) I don't mind if it's pronounced the more English Lee-oh-nee here.

Would love to know honest throughts please, esp from French posters? Eg is it dated in France? What would be the reception there? Etc...

Thank you in advance!

Francophone here!

I think it's a beautiful name - both Léonie and Noémi are on my (hopeful) future list Smile

It's not a common name; but at the same time I don't think it would be rare. I think it would be a great choice, and a lovely hint to her paternal heritage.

Congrats OP!

Léonie is one of my favourite ever names - I’ve known two over the years and both are pronounced the way you would like to - Lay-o-nie - and people mostly pronounced them correctly.

I know a Léonie, she is young adult and very nice.

I think Léonie is gorgeous and I think Leo is an adorable nickname if she likes

I knew a Léonie at school and she had this ethereal look about her.
It's a beautiful and unusual name

DD is Léonie. I'm French, DH isn't. I absolutely adore her name. It definitely almost never gets pronounced the "right" way (People always say Lee-oh-nee). but I really don't mind it.

We live in the UK so can't really comment on how it's perceived in France but my family love it (though they could be lying!) And there are a few in my young nephew and nieces classes. I wouldn't say it is dated, just much more popular in France (top 20 I think, Compared to over 1000th in the UK)

I never suggest it on these boards as I don't want it to become too popular here and just be my DD's name 😂.

Genuine question, can you register a baby in UK with an accent, I've never thought about that before (assuming you are in the UK)?

Lovely name, I know a Leonie but with a Scottish accent it tends to be pronounced LeeOhNay which isn't nice and soft like its meant to be 🙄

RogueFemale · 18/02/2025 03:22

I have a good friend called Leonie (UK, pr. LEE-e-nie). So of course I very much like the name, and it will translate to any European country I'd imagine.

An alternative to consider would be Eloise (another good friend, UK, but lives in Paris).

mathanxiety · 18/02/2025 04:16

I think it's lovely and would go down well in France.

There were a few in my year in school in Ireland back in the 70s/80s, all pronounced Lee-OH-nee.
