Hi everyone,

My wife and I are struggling to find a name that feels both cool and elegant and works well in both Portuguese and English.

Could you share your thoughts on our shortlist?

  • Louie/Louis
  • Eduardo
  • Manoel/Manuel
  • Gustavo/August
  • Nicolau
  • Teo/Theo
  • Tomé
  • Sebastião/an
  • Baltazar/Balthazar
  • Gaspar
  • Álvaro
  • Óscar
  • Ollie

Any other suggestions?

Louis, Sebastian, Oscar and August work well in English, and presumably Portuguese? The others probably less so, although I don't think anyone would raise their eyebrows at Eduardo or Manuel.

Theo/Teo would have pronunciation issues. Ollie seems 'too English' to reflect both heritages.

Definitely not Balthazar!

Teo

We were in a similar position - went with Henry and we find it works really well (Henri/que) :)

Of all those, I really like Louis/Luis and Eduardo/Edward.

Neurotoxic · 16/02/2025 20:23

I think it depends on the surname.

Hopealong · 16/02/2025 20:27

I love Louie/Louis, would choose Louie spelling as other spelling would become pronounced Luish in Portugal I would imagine, unless that is what you want.

We're a Portuguese/Scottish couple and did the exact same thing.

Be warned though OP - the vast majority of Portuguese won't pronounce/aspirate the "H" sound, so he would be "enry"

Oh, how lovely to hear another couple who did this!

I know, and it's absolutely fine by us, we also call him "Enri" :)

How about Tiago? Or Rafael?

MolkosTeenageAngst · 16/02/2025 21:03

Balthazar definitely doesn’t work in English. The others are all fine, obviously some of your names like Ollie, Theo and Louis are already popular names here but I don’t think anybody would raise eyebrows at Eduardo, Nicolau etc. If you want your sons Portuguese heritage to be obviously to others then I would go with one of the names not commonly used by native English people, equally if you don’t want it to be obvious go with one of the names already in Top 100 here. If that’s not important but you just want a name both sides of the family will accept then just go with whichever you like best (as long as not Balthazar!).

Chickenqueen · 18/02/2025 07:05

My cousin has a Brazilian wife and they called their baby Artur which I love!

tinytemper66 · 18/02/2025 07:06

Tiago

NeedSomeComfy · 18/02/2025 07:31

I am in Portugal. I know a Louis here who always gets his name pronounced wrong so I would skip that.
Tiago, Santiago, Frederico, Francisco, Miguel and Diogo are all popular and could all work fine (although in the UK many people would mix it up with Diego).
Ary and Caio are quite an unusual portuguese names that could work in English too.

ArcOfTheCello · 18/02/2025 07:35

From your list I would definitely choose Nicolau - have never met one, but love the sound of it.

Starsandall · 18/02/2025 08:20

Theo, Oscar, Sebastian and Louis are all really lovely names. I think Ollie is one of the most popular boys names. My favourites from your list are Oscar and Theo.
