Baby passport - Space 17 name change

Hello,
I know there are registrars on this forum so I hoped someone might be able to answer this question.
Does the requirement to prove that a child uses a different name in order to get a first passport apply to space 17 name changes on a birth certificate? (Change made within a year, no deed poll required).
Please see the screenshot below.
Thanks!

Not a registrar but we did a space 17 name change and then applied for first passport. It doesn't apply in this case, as it is their official birth name now. It is a change on the birth cerificate, rather than a name change (in a legal point of view).🙂

WolfMother326 · 12/02/2025 15:26

Thank you @Squidtentacles that's really helpful

Another non-registrar here but had a baby's name corrected on a BC. Agree with what @Squidtentacles posted.
The name on the BC has been corrected and shows the name that the passport is for.

The points in the image are for when a child's name has been changed by deed poll.

Thank you @HeCharters 😊

You are welcome, @WolfMother326 .

WolfMother326 · 23/03/2025 15:56

We must have been really unlucky because we've been asked for all this further documentation and our application put on hold til we supply and letter, and further proof of use of the name, and the deed poll. But how can I supply a deed pill record when we never used it?

OP posts:
Squidtentacles · 23/03/2025 19:30

That must be a mistake on their end. There is no deed poll name change. A change was made to the birth certificate. They shouldn't be asking you for anything. We didn't have this with my son's application. It wasn't an issue. So have they seen the birth certificate and have an issue with the change? So strange! Perhaps your application has gone to someone new at the job and doesn't understand!

WolfMother326 · 24/03/2025 15:45

@Squidtentacles this is what I thought too. I called them and tried to dispute it and they were very assertive that they were right. I've written a letter and his father too, we've sent it with the NHS records with the new name but I hope we don't get asked for a deed poll as well.

I hope you manage to sort this out @WolfMother326 what a pain!

WolfMother326 · 31/03/2025 22:25

@Squidtentacles the application was approved and the passport arrived! So glad my letter worked. I'm so relieved.

Hello, I'm so sorry I appreciate this is a really old thread, but I'm in this boat now having changed baby name with the space 17 amendment on BC,now applying for first passport. One of the questions the passport officr asks is if been known by any other previous names, did you put yes? And did you need any further evidence to support the name change?

Squidtentacles · 29/01/2026 12:09

@babysfirstholiday I'm pretty certain I said no to that question, because for the first few months of life, your name isn't really relevant (other than for family identifying you!). From a legal point of view, there hasn't been any records of the use of the other name yet.
My son's passport got issued with no as the answer and he's used his passport twice to travel too😊

Hiya - we're trying to fill out an application for a first passport post-space 17 name change too! Wondering if you ended up answering no or yes to that question and what the outcome was for you? I'm stuck on what to do!! Thanks so much :)

Hi!
I answered no to this question- however, I did then contact the passport office just to let them know that baby had a space 17 name change as I didn't want it to cause issues with the application. But the advisor told me that as new name is on baby's birth certificate, it shouldnt be a problem, but they made a note of it anyway. Baby's passport came through fine with no issues, and pretty quickly too.

So in summary, I think the passport office are pretty used to space 17 name changes and you can answer no I think.

Squidtentacles · 26/02/2026 07:34

No is what I answered too and no issues.

Thanks so much for getting back to me! That's great to know, glad it all worked out for you with minimal faff :) just to check - did you put the original name in the application where it asks if baby was ever known by another name, or did you just list the name as it appeared in space 17?

Thanks so much again!!

I didn't put the original name because I ticked no to having being known as another name :)

Marinara · 12/03/2026 13:41

Well my unfortunate update is that despite not using the old name anywhere on the application and sending in the birth certificate showing the space 17 name change, our baby's passport has just arrived.... with the old name! It's caused great stress and upset as the original name belonged to someone in the family who's caused us a great deal of stress and upset during the first year of our baby's life, and we've also booked travel for 2nd April! Now they're investigating the mistake and we'll have to apply for a replacement passport.

My advice to anyone reading this in future who's applying with a space 17 name change: call the passport office after you apply to double check with them that they are going to use the correct updated name! We just trusted they'd do it and regret that now.

AlbieJiggered · 12/03/2026 17:03

@Marinara , thanks for the update.

No point in regretting it if it was them who made the mistake.

Hope it is resolved swiftly.

Squidtentacles · 12/03/2026 18:04

@Marinara that is a really stupid mistake for them to make!

Oh no!!! So sorry to hear this.

They shouldn't issue a passport in a name that you've not applied in, it should have been obvious to them :(

Like I said in a previous post I did reach out to them after just to make sure they were aware, so I think you're right to suggest that people in the same situation do so going forward.
