DH loves it but something feels off.

So where did the Jones come from then?

Irish Joneses!

I’d assumed “Yonna” Jones and was about to say how nice it is. “EyeOwnAh Jones” less so because of the repetition as you’ve said.

I really like the suggestion of Isla. But my favourite Scottish names are Kirsty and Senga which are not particularly popular here, however.

I like Lorna but DH says it sound really sad (as in mournful) 😂💖

Iona Jones is too rhymey for me.

Isla Jones
Ida Jones
Sara Jones
Bridget Jones - the best.
Catriona Jones

MistyF · 08/02/2025 06:30

No, not Bridget Jones - there's old chick lit and films with Bridget Jones as titular main character

I think it's -on- -on- in name that make it sound sing-songy and weird.
I do like suggestions of Ida Jones.

I also like Lorna Jones better than Iona Jones. I don't think it sounds sad.

CherryMarigold · 08/02/2025 07:15

I'm not keen on Iona and funnily enough I also think Lorna sounds mournful!
What about Fiona or Ffion?

The mournful Lorna connection is because of “forlorn”.

Samantha Jones ? 😉

How about
Catriona Jones?
Siobhan Jones?

Both have the io but without emphasising the o sound

Oh you are right, I don't think it goes, is it maybe because Jones is a predominantly Welsh name so the Scottish name doesn't "go"

I think it’s just too many ‘oh’s !

How about Ianthe?

Whoarethoseguys · 08/02/2025 13:46

I think it's lovely.

NefiBlw · 08/02/2025 16:12

Which Iona Jones do you mean? I know a few of them.

I like it. Iona Carr wouldn't work

biggreenapple24 · 11/02/2025 23:58

No it doesn't work, I want to say "Iona Jonah"

VivienneDelacroix · 11/02/2025 23:59

I really love it.

researchers3 · 12/02/2025 00:04

I like it!

I thought iona was Scottish?

I read it as I Oh Na.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 12/02/2025 00:04

I adore Lorna, to me it has wild, romantic Lorna Doone imagery rather than a more lonely vibe as such (although I do understand the auditory link with “forlorn”).

I also love pp suggestion of Ianthe - so pretty with lovely literary links, yet rarely used.

But I don’t see an issue with Iona Jones? Repeated sounds in names often make them more memorable - that’s why some Hollywood stars or comic superheroes had alliterative names for example. I’m not a huge fan of Iona but I actually like it with Jones! And with a commonplace surname, it might be nice to make it more memorable.

thrifty24 · 12/02/2025 00:24

Feels like too many vowels

thrifty24 · 12/02/2025 00:27

Luna, Nora, Nina, Amele, Nina, Anna, Lena, Imogen, Isla, Innes

StrikeAlways · 12/02/2025 01:11

I think it works really well actually. I can definitely see a strong professional woman called Iona Jones

BeaLola · 12/02/2025 01:19

To be it sounds like I own a Jones

If you like Lorna how about

Laura Jones
Louisa Jones
Fiona Jones

NefiBlw · 12/02/2025 08:02

@BeaLola , the Ionas I know say it as Yonna. Welsh name not connected with the Scottish name.

Jessbow · 12/02/2025 09:06

Iona Jones sounds fine to me ( I own a)
The only Yana I know is spelled Jana anyway

I do love Lorna Though

CeeJay81 · 12/02/2025 09:10

I think it goes well pronounced the Welsh way. I am a welsh Jones and it wouldn't surprise me if there is someone local with that name. My dd is Lydia Jones.
