Lenny or Leonard?

Please don't say if you hate the name/s. We love Lenny so much.

I think I'd like Leonard on the BC but my husband doesn't like Leonard at all. He wants pure Lenny, and he could go by 'Len' if he ever wanted to be particularly serious.

What do you think - Lenny or Leonard?

Lennon or Lennard shorten to Lenny

Wouldn't Leonardo or Leonard not shorten to Leo?

Leonard is pronounced Len-ard

Catandsquirrel · 03/02/2025 14:06

Leonard

Whoarethoseguys · 03/02/2025 14:15

As someone suggested if your husband doesn't like Leonard would he consider Leon? I think Lenny would work as a nickname for that.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 03/02/2025 14:19

Lenny is so cute

I’d probably put Leonard on the BC to cover all bases

HugoYorway · 03/02/2025 15:59

Sir Lenny Henry is Lenford Lenworth

BatchCookBabe · 03/02/2025 16:03

Neither. I would pick Leo.

Not a fan of Lenny (sorry!) Leonard is OK.

But Leo is the best. Smile

RuthW · 03/02/2025 16:17

Leonard

Lyn348 · 03/02/2025 16:21

I'd go with Lennon or Leon NN Lenny. I'm with your DH on Leonard but i think Lenny is too informal to go on their BC.

Properdaebak · 04/02/2025 13:01

Lenny is of course the diminutive of Leonard, but if your DH objects to Leonard on the BC why not just put Lenny as your DCs official name? When would he use Leonard anyway, if your child is known as Lenny everywhere in life, with Len being the name that he would inevitably get by those who feel the need to shorten every name there is?
There's also the NN Leo, he could get that too of course.

HugoYorway · 04/02/2025 13:19

If you are only going to call him Lenny, register him as Lenny.
There are plenty of babies registered with names like Archie, Alfie, Teddy, Tommy, Freddie etc.
I really like Leonard, but you don't.

Calling him Leon nn Lenny seems ridiculous.

If comments on the name here caused you anxiety, maybe you could think of some different names you like.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 06/02/2025 00:54

Leonard, nn Lenny. I know two toddler Lenny’s (I think it’s rising in popularity) and they are both Leonard on the BC but are always called Lenny. I think it’s nice to give him the choice as an adult personally and it also helps avoid the “diminutive as given name” trend which is becoming a bit tiresome now imo (and seems to be quite stereotypically British as I don’t see/hear it much in other counties).

jsku · 06/02/2025 01:25

Leo

Leonard invokes a 100yo grandfather for me. I doubt it’s a name your child will ever actually use.

Plus - since the father doesn't like the name - surely its a veto?

theduchessofspork · 07/02/2025 00:39

Lenny is sweet as a nn but it does sound a bit backward as a full name - he may not thank you

Leon and Leonardo both work if your husband doesn’t like Leonard. But please not Lennon or Lennard - they are both embarrassing.

Vvvvvvvvvvvvvv · 07/02/2025 01:28

I have a Leonard, named to have multiple options to shorten it, Leo being our favourite at the time.

He is now nearly 4 and goes by Leonard. It suits him and he wouldn't respond to anything else. There are also 4 Leo's in his pre-school class.

Needspaceforlego · 07/02/2025 01:33

Lenny sounds very nn to me. Leonard gives more options. Or Leonardo.

Lleys · 07/02/2025 01:34

Love love love this name!

BettyBardMacDonald · 07/02/2025 01:47

Leonard. Have some respect for your offspring.

MayaPinion · 07/02/2025 01:56

Leo, Leon, Allen, Alexander, Callen, Galen, Glen, Len. I’m not a fan of Leonard.

KettleOnCredit · 07/02/2025 02:15

Both are horrible IMHO.
If you have had to close a previous thread as you were offended about people not liking the name then surely that should tell you something?
Why then would you be so determined to name a child with such an ugly name?

JanglingJack · 07/02/2025 02:20

Leonard shortened to Lenny/Len.

I so wanted this for my son back in the 90s but his dad's surname was Henry.

I was a massive Supergrass fan.

What are your kids called then? Come on... Out with it so we can all judge as you have you have judged.

I also loved Leonard from the film Awakenings with Robert de Niro and Robin Williams.

BaMammaWASOoodiks · 07/02/2025 02:29

I always find it odd when people's actual birth certificate name is the shortened version of a longer name, so I'd go with Leonard and call him Lenny.

OTOH if the dad doesn't like Leonard, then maybe just go for something different.

Are you maybe sleep deprived and didn't see OP wasn't asking for criticism, or just, you know, a cow?

See, I find it odd when people's birth certificate name isn't the name their parents actually intend to call them

BettyBardMacDonald · 07/02/2025 04:16

@PreggersWithBaby2

The problem is that a diminutive suitable for a toddler really limits an adult's options later in life. Parents need to think beyond the first four years.

There's nothing cute about a 40-year-old Teddy, Betsy or Augie. Or any of that ilk.
