They are lovely names. I’d consider Felix as well

Ygfrhj · 29/01/2025 08:22

I like all of them except Robert.

madamweb · 29/01/2025 08:27

Cecil - aspirational try hard parents , desperate to be seen as upper class
Clement- aspirational try hard parents, desperate to be seen as upper class
Robert -nice, good shortened version too.
Hector- aspirational try hard parents desperate to be seen as upper class
Edmund- ok, bit prissy. Ed makes an decent shortening

BootballJoy · 29/01/2025 08:30

I've met the most Edmunds and Hectors at baby groups etc. I like Edmund. Much prefer Robin to Robert. Not a fan of Cecil or Clement (despite knowing a lovely Clement!)

What if these 'aspirational try hard parents, desperate to be seen as upper class ' simply liked the name? What if they had no ulterior intentions? Would that change your views? I'm genuinely interested!

Hector or Edmund

Robert is hideous...cannot imagine a baby Robert!!! A bald man in his 40s maybe...

SnoopysHoose · 29/01/2025 08:53

I know two labradors that are Hector, lovely boys 🐾

fingerbobz · 29/01/2025 09:09

Cecil? Sounds like a camp / upper class lord of the manor from the 1920s

Clement - see above

Robert - normal blokes name

Edmund - Blackadder but could be shortened to Ed or Eddie

fingerbobz · 29/01/2025 09:10

Hector is quite popular although it's awful. Sounds like hectare

fingerbobz · 29/01/2025 09:11

Robert is a normal name although there are no small kids or babies that i know with that name

EducatingArti · 29/01/2025 09:14

What about Edgar instead of Edmund?

Hotafternoon · 29/01/2025 09:45

None of them, even Robert I don't like as my rescue stray cat was given the name by the rescue charity before I changed it.

I now think of a hairy, ginger nightmare when I see the name Robert. 😄

CeceliaImrie · 29/01/2025 11:44

Love them all except Robert.

I suppose tenuous connections can colour our opinions but some of these comments are awful, imagine thinking Hector sounds like a bully's name.Hmm

YummyInMyTummy · 29/01/2025 11:47

I really dislike them all, I think they’re awful - sorry. Robert is fine, but very unremarkable.

RuthW · 29/01/2025 12:24

Cecil lovely
Clement dislike, too feminine
Robert ok
Hector lovely
Edmund dislike but love Edwin

theduchessofspork · 29/01/2025 18:32

Robert’s great and very underused (and Robbie and Bobby are nice short forms)

I quite like Hector, but will be unfortunate if he’s a bossy boots.

Cecil is bad, Clement is worse.

Edmund will be yet another Eddie / Teddy / Ned, which have all been a bit overdone so I probably wouldn’t, tho quite like it

I think you’re either upper class or you aren’t, it’s not a shift you can make by calling your kid Clement (which I don’t think anyone of any class has used since the 30s, though it’s probably due a comeback)

rosyvalentine · 29/01/2025 18:48

Clement pronounced the French way - Clem-ont - is much better than Clement pronounced the English way - Clem-ent.

SausageRoll2020 · 29/01/2025 19:04

Love Clement
Neutral on Hector and Cecil
Robert and Edmund are both strong classics with plenty of nickname options

Longwaysouth · 29/01/2025 19:11

I like Robert and Hector

Sinkintotheswamp · 29/01/2025 19:12

Hector is great.

EdithStourton · 29/01/2025 19:14

Not keen on Cecil (whether said SEE-Sil or SEH-Sil).
Like the others, esp Edmund.

A PP suggested Edwin, which is an excellent name with the same sort of vibe.

Oh I totally agree. But people seem to think they can...

I find it hard to imagine anyone actually likes Cecil (for example). It's such a wet lettuce of a name.
.. But they might convince themselves they do in order to justify a name that is really just about attempting some social climbing

TriangleScratch · 29/01/2025 19:28

We have a lot of American kids in our school due to a local employer and both Edmund and Robert are incredibly popular right now. At least two in every class. Plus, inexplicably, Charles.

I prefer Edmund in your list.
