Sofia or Sophia?

We want to call our daughter Sofia/Sophia but we cannot decide on the spelling. I am Greek and my partner is British. Any other Greek mums out there? Which spelling did you choose?

I think Sophia is lovely.

kwetu · 28/01/2025 22:28

Sophia gets my vote, Sofia is too close to sofa for my liking!

Raggeo · 28/01/2025 22:35

My husband is Greek and Sophia made our shortlist of girls names. Didn't use it in the end though. We preferred the 'ph' spelling since we live in the UK.

Orangebadger · 28/01/2025 22:36

I thought the Greek version is with a ph and the Spanish an f? My DS is Sophia and we both prefer the ph, I think it looks softer.

Maxorias · 28/01/2025 23:52

If she's half greek then I'd pick Sophia, but I prefer Sofia otherwise.

But I think it doesn't matter too much - both spellings are widely known, she'll have to spell it whichever one you choose, so just pick the one you like best.

As an Italian and a Sofia, I would vote for that spelling, but if you are Greek, then Sophia would make more sense. My experience has been that people always asked in the UK, but here in the USA they almost always assume it's PH.

Sofia

Sophia

Surely Greek is Sophia. It stems from sophist - meaning wise. Philosophy means literally lover of wisdom. Weird you would choose the f if you have Greek background.

shoopshoopdedoo · 29/01/2025 10:26

Sophia!

I know where it stems from but given we don’t have the same alphabet, it seems to me weird to see it with two letters (ph) rather one letter. In greek is Σοφία.That’s all

I know. But that middle letter is ‘phi’ in mathematics not ‘fi’.

Emanwenym · 29/01/2025 13:22

@karpouzi , as pp, phi is interpreted as 'ph' not 'f' .Philip not Filip etc

FaeFay · 29/01/2025 13:27

Sophia for me

theduchessofspork · 29/01/2025 18:29

Sophia - much more elegant looking IMO, and the standard UK spelling so she’s less likely to have to correct it

But there were a LOT of them a couple years back, should that bother you

Firsttimebabymummy · 29/01/2025 18:44

Sophia

Glitchymn1 · 29/01/2025 18:46

Sophia

Firebird83 · 29/01/2025 20:55

Sophia

sel2223 · 29/01/2025 21:05

I prefer Sofia and, as it's phonetic, find it easier from an international perspective

avocadotofu · 29/01/2025 21:05

I'd go with Sophia.

YouveGotAFastCar · 29/01/2025 21:10

Sophia here too, it’s the default spelling in both places.

HouseFullOfChaos · 29/01/2025 21:16

Sophia.

Sofia is the capital of Bulgaria, it's a place name like Paris or London.

karpouzi · 29/01/2025 21:36

I know it’s very common in the UK and funnily enough not very popular in Greece. Tbh I don’t love it but we chose it as it is one of the few names that is Greek but it has also become an international name.
