Violeta

I hope this is the final thread after my other posts because it would be great to resolve this given that I'm a few days from due date. What do you think of Violeta as a sister for Nina? We live in Spain (which is why Violeta rather than Violet) and considered and discarded these ones, which were the only ones we even halfway agreed on:

Valentina (rhymes with Nina)
Josephine (dated here to the point of making a child stick out and not in a good way)
Rosa (DH sister's name)
Sylvie (I like it but he doesn't)

I do love Violeta my only concern is floweriness (ha) or pretentiousness. But at this point I'm not sure what else we do because Sofía, Lucía etc. are extremely popular here and I'm not really that into them, although they are objectively beautiful.

Love it .

murasaki · 28/01/2025 20:57

I like it.

BootballJoy · 28/01/2025 20:57

I'm not a massive fan of Violet but I think Violeta would be pronounced totally differently more like Vee oh let a? In which case it's beautiful!

groundhoglet · 28/01/2025 20:58

Correct @BootballJoy Vee-oh-let-a. Nickname Vee I suppose

Yes it's lovely.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 28/01/2025 21:00

Violet and Viola are nicer than Violeta - but Violetta is nicer overall

JC03745 · 28/01/2025 21:00

Its lovely. My only issue is that its 4 syllables, so a mouthful, if she might end up with a very long or double barreled surname.

I also like Rosalia, but this too is 4 syllables and might be more Italian than Spanish?

BeachRide · 28/01/2025 21:03

She will be called Viennetta (ice cream) if you relocate to the UK during the school years ...

BuntyBeaufort · 28/01/2025 21:03

Lovely name, much nicer than Violet. Nn Letty?

JC03745 · 28/01/2025 21:07

Ahh, yes, Viola. I really prefer that to Violeta actually! Would that work in Spanish? Its also more in keeping with Nina 2 syllables and Viola is 3.

groundhoglet · 28/01/2025 21:13

@JC03745 I don't like Viola because unfortunately one translation is he/she/it rapes...

chattyness · 28/01/2025 21:15

Mittens67 · 28/01/2025 21:15

Another one here who immediately thinks Viennetta

Onlyvisiting · 28/01/2025 21:15

Much prefer Rosa......

It's a no from me.

GreylingsSkin · 28/01/2025 21:17

Very pretty name. Classic and elegant. And a gorgeous flower too!

SushiWarrior · 28/01/2025 21:17

asparagusffern · 28/01/2025 21:18

She won't

Yes Vivi and Letty both pretty diminutives.

MeAndMyCatCharlotte · 28/01/2025 21:22

I would just go with Violet. I think it’s much nicer and goes better with Nina.

Conkerjar · 28/01/2025 21:25

I love it - and know one, she's Italian and writes very funny stories, she's someone I really admire and am really happy whenever I get to be in the same (virtual) hangout space. I also love Valentina. I recommended it to my SIL recently. She had a boy. I'm nursing it fondly even though I'm done having babies 😁

groundhoglet · 28/01/2025 21:29

Thank you everyone for your opinions.
@asparagusffern Vivi is a sweet nickname

My niece is called Violeta, her nickname is Violé - I had not realized that connotation!

I really like the name - it certainly suits her.
