Boy names with girly nicknames?

I’m still on the quest to find the perfect name and decided to steer away from my original very feminine names list and look towards more traditionally boys names as I’m running out of time and can’t make up my mind.

So far I’ve thought of Wyatt, Elliott (Ellie), Emerson and Emmett (Emmy/Emma) and Ryan.

I’ve met two girls in my life named Mason and Gabriel but those don’t fit my taste at all.

I am also open for more traditionally unisex names such as River, Avery and Blake.

Mila, Autumn, Matilda, Elise, Julie, Noelle, Maeve and Anya are currently in my “traditionally female names” list.

thank you!

How about Carter?
Blake.
Frankie.
Jamie.
Sidney is on both my girl/boy list.
Charlie (Charles/Charlotte).
Robin is on my girl’s list but is also a boy’s name.
River.
August.
Forrest.

I don't like the idea of giving a girl a boy's name.

But Robin/Robyn is a great choice.

Greenrailings · 26/01/2025 06:59

Billie
Bobby
Stevie
Frankie

... I hadn't thought about it before, but I actually love these names.

Don't give your daughter a boy's name.

CurlewKate · 26/01/2025 07:21

@tsimq " I know many women with names you’d traditionally link to men and they love it,"

Why do they "love it"? Do you think a man would "love" being called Mary or Rose?

MassiveSalad22 · 26/01/2025 07:27

Other way round but Harry/Harriet

Dion too (not sure if the spelling - Dion Dublin always seems a girly name to me but I love it, he’s deffo not girly!)

Ainsley - again always think of that as a girl’s name. Love it for either.

Evelyn can be girl or boy?

Devon?? Know male and female Devons.

When I was naming my daughter my criteria was that it was to be a name that was not a feminised boy name. Now those are rife!! Wanted a purely girl name (but not girly/feeble). Nowt wrong with being a lass!

To add - that was a lot of pregnancy tunnel vision and pretty arbitrary parameters. Doesn’t mean anything to anyone but the baby and the parent and I know masses of awesome people with all sorts of names.

Just give her a girl's name. Do you think there is something wrong with being a girl?

I once worked in the US with a woman called Mario. She found it embarrassing having a boy's name.

The Mario I know, I discovered years after I met her, is actually named Marie Odile 😂

bluebunnys · 26/01/2025 09:12

George - Georgie
Elliott - Ellie
Samuel - Sam
Robert - Bobbie
Gabriel - Gabby
Patrick - Patty

theduchessofspork · 26/01/2025 16:46

God please don’t do that - why on earth would you give your daughter a boys’ name unless you want to give her a complex that a boy was what you wanted

Gabriel is unisex (angels don’t have a sex) albeit usually spelt Gabrielle for a girl

I like Anya - you could go for Annis if you want something unisex sounding

I think Julie sounds rather fresh these days - you could use Julianne as a full name, which is close to Julian if you want a slightly unisex feel

Unisex:
Arran
Meredith
Alexis
Jocelyn (Joss)
Robin
Rowan

Names that are female but perhaps not especially feminine sounding
Ffion
Liv
Astrid
Lois
Laurel
Jessica (with Jess or Jessie as a nn)
Joanna / Josephine (with Jo)
Nicole
Olwen
Mirren
Merryn
Brooke
Frances
Coral

A lot of your choices - River, Avery, Autumn - are very of the moment and will date. Blake would be odd for a girl in the Uk.

bluebunnys · 26/01/2025 16:53

Blake would be odd for a girl in the Uk.

Not to me

I've never met a male Blake and have only heard of Blake Lively.

Shewaitsandwaits · 26/01/2025 16:56

Dallas is nice for a girl or a boy.
I've known both with that name.
Brooklyn is probably overused.
Bailey, Bryn, Briar, Marley, Casey.
Charlie, Aubrey, Ellis.

SushiWarrior · 26/01/2025 17:02

I know 2 little girls called Ellis which is obviously traditionally a boys name (could further shorten it to Elle/Ellie if you wanted to I suppose)

ChocoChocoLatte · 26/01/2025 17:13

Aurora - nn Rory
Alexandra - Alex / Sandy / Sasha
Nola
Noa
Evangeline - Evan
Harriet - Harry
Stephanie - Stevie
Charlotte - Charlie
Harper
Josephine - Joe / Joey
Cameron
Alana - Alan

Our daughter have a very distinctly female first name which is lovely but she's known by her middle name which is more commonly used for males. She loves it and it suits her perfectly.

Not everyone will like your choice op but in our case there's no danger of mixing her up due to her name.

Oh and you'll never get to dictate her nick name - that's what pals are for Grin

SiobhanSharpe · 07/04/2025 17:57

Why on earth would anyone want to give their baby girl a boy's name? What are you telling her? It used to be bad enough when it was confined to the odd sexist Dad who desperately wanted a boy and didn't get one. But now we see women thinking it's cute or trendy. Well, it's really not cute. And we know what happens to trendy names. One poster upthread suggested 'masculine' shortenings of female names like

  • Stephanie to Stevie -- it's more usually Steph or Steffie, isn't it?
  • Charlotte to Charlie - Lottie is much better than the over-used Charlie for a girl.
And the female diminutive for Josephine (or Joanna) is Jo. Joe is a bloke and Joey is a baby kangaroo. I really hope the covert misogyny that gives a baby girl a boy's name will soon be just another trend, cringeworthy but thankfully passé. In fact the misogyny is laid bare because it never happens the other way round - how many boys are called Rose or Sophie? Not so cool, is it? And those names that were previously more 'unisex', for example Hilary or Beverly, are now rarely given to boys. More boys' names will go the same way; Robin could be next.
CurlewKate · 07/04/2025 19:24

So long as you would call a boy Sarah….
