Initials...help!

Okay, so we asked for help last year as our last names are T.F and we knew we couldn't use a W name but were unsure whether we could get away with a D name but we listened to your advice and used an S name instead.

DD2 is now 6 months old and fits her S name perfectly despite being so in love with our favourite D name before.

I have found myself pregnant again (I know I know, very quick Blush) and although it's too early to find out the sex, DP and I have been looking at names.

We really like the name Melanie, giving the initials MTF.

Is this okay? Would you immediately think of MTF as 'male to female'? Am I overthinking?

It's not the end of the world if we have to go back to the drawing board, we have other ideas, I just wanted your opinions again, thanks!

MTF is fine! Congrats and all the best x

SquirrelBlue · 18/01/2025 08:53

Kindly I think you're overthinking. Unless you're going to monogram everything, I wouldn't worry about it. One of mine has initials that nearly spell a rude word but no one has realised or commented yet except their grandad who made one comment and then forgot about it and moved on.
Congrats on your pregnancy. Melanie's a lovely name

Your overthinking
MTF is fine.

If you dig deep enough I expect any combo of three letters means something to somebody.

Overthinking!

ShinyWorthKeeping · 18/01/2025 09:06

Thank you everyone! Melanie firmly back on the table if it turns out DC3 is another girl.

I don’t think I have ever had to write my initials down for anything!! I’ve no idea what my colleagues middle names are, or my closest friends for that matter!!

SuperMaybe · 18/01/2025 09:12

I think you are overthinking but what about adding another middle name.

This isn't including a middle name, our last name is double barrelled T-F.

Growing up my initials spelt CAT which was fine as nothing negative but at school everyone seemed to know (I think a teacher may have pointed it out after noticing it in the register and I was often known as C the cat)

I used to work in research and patients names were anonymised to their initials. Only the 1st initial of a double barrelled name would be used though. So in your case, we would have used M-middle name initial-T. The F wouldn't have been used at all. If someone didn't have a middle name, it would have been M-T.

This was a very niche area, and the only time I've seen initials used, but does that change things? I'd guess that MUT wouldn't be great.

I think MTF is fine OP. I also considered initials when naming our DD1 as I know how cruel kids can be!

NamingBee · 18/01/2025 11:59

Definitely think MTF would be fine. I also wouldn’t be against DTF, especially if you could use a middle name as well. I wouldn’t immediately make the connection with DTF. Our surname begins with I, so I was very conscious I couldn’t I couldn’t use certain initials such as STI.

Edited

I asked on here last year with DD2 as we loved both Daphne and Diana but pretty much everyone told us not to!

Our favourite name is probably Winnona but can't saddle a child being WTF Grin

Baby has middle names decided already.

Every job I've ever had (quite a few!) staff have been abbreviated to initials on memos, minutes, rosters etc.

Maxorias · 19/01/2025 01:01

Hey OP,

There are enough acronyms in the world that almost any name is sure to stand for something. Mine could stand for "bank card" or "bank account" in my language. It also could mean "taxi" in another language... So unless it's something really outrageous like STI or NAZI, then I wouldn't think too hard on it.

I was initially worried when I realized my DC1's initials could stand for "baby" in my language. He's 6 and it's literally never come up. Not even once.

Our of interest, which initials would be used in the case of a double barreled surname at your companies?

I said up thread, that we'd use M- Middle initial-T. We only ever used 3 letters, and only the 1st initial of a double barrel surname.

GoodVibesHere · 19/01/2025 10:47

You could give your baby two middle names if that might help.
